Exploring Dehua Porcelain: A Journey through China’s Iconic Blanc de Chine in Spain
A Decade of Heritage and Global Reach: Dehua’s Blanc de Chine
The celebrated "Blanc de Chine: Dehua Porcelain" exhibition officially opened on November 11, 2025, in the historic city of Talavera de la Reina, Spain. Known for its long-standing tradition of ceramics, this city is connecting with one of the profound epicenters of porcelain craftsmanship in China.
The exhibition celebrates the essence of Dehua porcelain, showcasing not only its historical significance but also its modern evolution. Dehua, located in the Fujian Province of China, boasts a rich legacy in ceramic culture that stretches back centuries. At the opening ceremony, Wu Zhipu, the head of Dehua County, expressed, "The essence of Dehua porcelain lies in continuity. The craftsmanship has been passed down from master to apprentice for generations."
This dedication to craft has led to the creation of an impressive network of ceramic artists. Currently, Dehua is home to over 6,000 professionals, including celebrated master artist Lian Deli. His work, titled "Myth," features porcelain so thin that it measures only 0.2 millimeters, showcasing what is considered a landmark achievement in Dehua's porcelain craftsmanship.
Technological advancements have significantly impacted this traditional art form, as Lian noted, "With digital tools and precise firing controls, we can achieve thinner, lighter, and more transparent forms. AI and 3D modeling serve as valuable aids rather than threats, allowing for the final refinement to still rely on decades of handwork and experience."
The growth of Dehua's porcelain industry speaks for itself, with exports reaching over 190 countries and regions. In the year-to-date period from January to October, the industry cluster's output has soared, amounting to an astonishing 60.2 billion yuan. The local government has also registered the "Blanc de Chine" trademark in Spain, aiming to leverage the Spanish market as a gateway to Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
The exhibition also marks the beginning of a sister-city relationship between Dehua and Talavera de la Reina, intended to deepen cooperation in cultural exchange, trade, and ceramic craftsmanship. During this partnership, Wu Zhipu announced plans to establish overseas promotion centers for Blanc de Chine as well as invites for Spanish partners to visit China. "We want more people around the world to experience the charm of Dehua porcelain," he said, emphasizing the importance of raising global awareness for their cultural artifact.
As Dehua Porcelain continues to expand its international footprint, the county plans to integrate its ceramic heritage more closely with cultural tourism. By offering immersive experiences, Dehua aims to invite visitors worldwide to engage with the artistry behind "China's white." Visitors can expect to not only admire the stunning beauty of porcelain art but also to understand the labor and tradition that underpin each piece.
The increasing appreciation for Dehua's unique brand of porcelain is evident in its growing presence globally. As this exhibition showcases, the balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation creates a compelling narrative that takes audiences from their seats to the heart of China's rich ceramic history.
The Dehua exhibition emphasizes the ongoing commitment to preserving this artistic legacy while simultaneously adapting to the modern world. With plans to focus on global outreach and educational programs, the Dehua porcelain journey is set to continue inspiring lovers of art and culture for generations to come.
