Chengdu: A Beacon of Global Innovation



Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in Southwest China, is rapidly transforming into a major global innovation hub. This development aligns with China's goal set during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) and is highlighted by Chengdu's impressive ascent to the 24th position in the 2025 Global Innovation Index.

The city is at the forefront of China's strategy to establish powerful innovation corridors, particularly between Chengdu and Chongqing. A critical component of this endeavor is the Western (Chengdu) Science City, which has become a central point for high-level innovation activities. It is home to national laboratories, innovation centers, significant scientific infrastructure, and specialized laboratories designed to foster advanced research and development.

A total of 96 national innovation platforms, including the National Precision Medicine Industrial Innovation Center and the National Supercomputing Center, have already set up operations in Chengdu. The city boasts 27 national research institutions and has initiated 65 collaborative innovation projects with various universities and research institutes, forming a robust ecosystem for scientific inquiry and commercialization.

In a bid to nurture future industries, Chengdu has rolled out comprehensive guidelines targeting 24 sectors, such as humanoid robotics and flexible display technology. This commitment to innovation is further evidenced by a 100 billion yuan (approximately $14.1 billion) fund established in July 2025 aimed at supporting hard-tech startups.
