Discover the Art of Dyeing at Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku
Starting July 9, 2025, the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku invites guests and travelers to indulge in the rich cultural heritage of Japanese dyeing through its newly launched event, ‘Enjoying the Tradition of Shinjuku: Dyeing Experience.’ This initiative aims to enhance the value of staying at the hotel while promoting the region's craftsmanship and traditions.
The Cultural Significance of Dyeing in Shinjuku
Shinjuku has long been known as a community dedicated to dyeing, carrying on the techniques that date back to the Edo period. The local dyeing culture is preserved and promoted by artisans from the Shinjuku Dyeing Council, ensuring that both visitors and locals can experience traditional dyeing methods firsthand. This event not only highlights the art of dyeing but also supports local craftsmanship, as it includes hands-on learning from skilled artisans.
What You Will Experience
Visitors can participate in both
katazome (stencil dyeing) and
shibori (tie-dyeing) experiences. Each month, different items can be crafted, allowing participants to leave with personalized souvenirs from their travels in Japan.
Katazome Experience
In the katazome workshop, you will be guided by master artisans from the Shinjuku Dyeing Council to create a tote bag adorned with a unique pattern inspired by the azalea flower — the symbol of the Shinjuku region. Participants will use stencils to dye the bag featuring the hotel’s logo, which is designed to be both functional and reflective of traditional artistry.
Shibori Experience
The shibori workshop allows participants to engage in a technique that involves twisting and tying fabric, creating beautiful patterns only achievable through skilled manipulation. After the dyeing process where participants will immerse their fabric in vibrant colors, they will take home their handcrafted handkerchiefs, completing the experience of creativity and tradition.

Azalée, a brand that combines local printing and dyeing techniques to deliver beautiful goods inspired by Shinjuku's heritage. Items available include tote bags, pouches, and hand towels, perfect for those looking to take a piece of Shinjuku craftsmanship home.
A Commitment to Preserve Tradition

The initiative, spearheaded by the Mayor of Shinjuku, Kenichi Yoshizumi, aims to celebrate the dyeing culture's significance and ensure its continuity for future generations.
This year, guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in Kimono culture, to ensure a vibrant and colorful remembrance of their times in Japan.
