Tokyo Zokei University Collaborates with Hachioji City to Revive Historical Heritage

Reviving Hachioji's Historical Heritage

Tokyo Zokei University, located in Hachioji, Tokyo, has made a notable contribution to the preservation and promotion of local history by working closely with Hachioji City. They recently produced and donated explanatory panels detailing the history of Hachioji Castle and the university's old campus building. These informative panels can be found near the guidance facility at the Hachioji Castle ruins, enhancing the visitor experience by providing historical context.

The initiative is significant as it stems from the university’s roots, having been established in 1966 on the site of what was once part of Hachioji Castle. Over the years, the university has relocated to its current location in Uzunuki Campus since 1993, but their commitment to the heritage of Hachioji remains strong. This project reflects a dedication to connecting past and present, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the rich history surrounding them.

Alongside the panels, the university has also embraced modern technology by creating augmented reality (AR) experiences for visitors. Utilizing smartphone devices, the AR feature allows users to explore digital recreations of Hachioji Castle’s lord's residence from the Sengoku period and the former campus building of Tokyo Zokei University. These digital reconstructions are accessible by scanning QR codes found on the explanatory panels, offering an interactive and immersive insight into how these historical sites appeared in their prime.

The AR experience aims to transport users back in time, effectively blending historical narratives with today’s technological capabilities. The lord's residence visualization appears beside a sign at the Hachioji Castle ruins, whereas the former campus visualization can be accessed through the educational panels provided by the university. Visitors can engage with their surroundings in a novel way, enriching their understanding of the historical locations they are exploring.

To commemorate the installation of these panels and the completion of the 3DCG reconstructions, a gathering took place on April 21, 2026. The event was attended by the Mayor of Hachioji City, the President of Tokyo Zokei University, and the Chairman of the Kanazawa Academy, which operates the university. This meeting is a testament to the collaborative spirit between the university and the city, highlighting the importance of fostering community connections through educational and historical pursuits.
