Unveiling the Junk Journal Club Japan 2026: A Creative Haven for Enthusiasts

Introducing the Junk Journal Club Japan 2026

The innovative event, originally launched as the "Junk Journal Exhibition and Exchange Fair" at THINGS ‘N’ THANKS last year, is returning with a fresh name: Junk Journal Club Japan (abbreviated as JCJ). This much-anticipated event will run from May 9 (Saturday) to June 7 (Sunday), 2026.

What's exciting about this year's iteration is that the changes aren't merely cosmetic. In fact, the number of participating artists has nearly doubled compared to the previous year. The event is structured in two parts: the first half from May 9 to May 24, and the second half from May 27 to June 7. Attendees can expect to see approximately 60 unique pieces on display that include the journal itself, along with various materials such as sharing files and boxed artworks, showcasing the diverse talents of each artist.

Highlighting this year’s event is the debut of hands-on workshops, scheduled for May 16 (Saturday). Titled "Collage Experience in Postcard Size," the workshop promises to be beginner-friendly, encouraging all to join in on the fun. Participants will learn how to create beautiful collages from junk materials. Additionally, artist-sponsored sales will be available during the event, offering popular materials and stamps for collage enthusiasts to further amplify their creativity.

Furthermore, continuing from last year, there will be an exciting "Exchange Event" allowing visitors to swap materials. This communal sharing experience embodies the spirit of collaboration inherent in collage culture, making it a delightful opportunity for attendees to connect and engage with one another. The ease of participation, especially for newcomers, ensures that everyone can join the fun.

The inaugural event last year received an overwhelming response, with all exhibited pieces selling out swiftly, marking a resounding success. In light of this enthusiasm, the Junk Journal Club aims to reach a wider audience and showcase the allure of junk journals. While the exhibition will be held annually, the workshops are planned to continue on a quarterly basis in the months ahead. Future plans include expanding the event to larger venues, attracting more participants, and ultimately becoming a focal point for the growth of junk journal culture.

What is a Junk Journal?

Junk journals are handmade books created by freely collaging materials that are considered "junk," such as old newspapers, clippings from magazines, and used envelopes. These creative expressions allow for personal artistry and serve as a unique medium for self-exploration and craftsmanship. "THINGS ‘N’ THANKS" has been at the forefront of providing vintage stationery alongside junk journal materials, making it an exciting hub for enthusiasts.
