Feed The Hood 34: Honoring Shock G Through Community Service

The East Oakland Collective (EOC) is set to host the Feed the Hood 34 event on August 23, 2025, a day dedicated to serving the unhoused community in Oakland, California. This initiative not only aims to provide essential supplies but also commemorates the legacy of the legendary Shock G, a founder of Digital Underground, who deeply impacted the music scene and the culture of the region.

As the fifth annual tribute to Shock G, this event holds a significant place in the community. The collaboration with Shock G's family and friends highlights how cultural influences can shape and amplify community efforts. EOC’s mission extends beyond this annual event; their commitment to service is ongoing, focusing on food distribution, homeless services, and advocacy throughout the year.

According to Candice Elder, the Founder and Executive Director of EOC, “Shock G believed in love, creativity, and taking care of each other – and that’s what this day is all about.” The Feed The Hood 34 event symbolizes a collective effort to honor his spirit through actionable community support, making a real difference in people’s lives.

Impact Beyond the Event

While Feed the Hood 34 is a significant day, the EOC's work persists beyond just one event. They conduct a client-choice market every week, offering community residents the ability to select groceries and household supplies freely. This feature is vital, as it empowers individuals by creating a sense of choice and dignity — essential elements for anyone impacted by economic hardship.

Through their Homeless Services Solutions program, the EOC not only provides supplies but also engages in direct advocacy work. Their initiatives aim to deliver long-term equity and dignity for the vulnerable populations within Oakland. This initiative truly extends the impact of Shock G’s legacy, celebrated for its blend of artistry, activism, and humanity.

EOC's commitment embodies values of leadership, resilience, creativity, and justice. The organization enables local residents to thrive in their neighborhoods by providing necessary resources to ensure they can eat, work, learn, and grow together as a community.
