Rising Demand for Ashinaga Scholarships Amidst Economic Challenges in Japan
In Japan, the
Ashinaga Scholarship Foundation, an organization supporting orphaned children and those with disabled parents, has reported an unprecedented number of applications for its
2026 academic year scholarships. With
1,819 applicants, the program saw a
187-increase from last year, but still,
632 applicants, representing
34.7%, were unable to receive the much-needed aid.
A Call for Funding
To address the dire needs of these families, the
Ashinaga Student Fundraising Committee will commence its annual fundraising campaign on April 18. This initiative is launched by students who have benefited from the scholarship, emphasizing the importance of providing financial resources to as many orphaned individuals as possible. The fundraising efforts will take place across approximately
120 locations nationwide. This comes after the
110th fundraising event in October 2022, which was also met with adversity due to economic conditions.
Economic Hardships for Grieving Families
A survey by the foundation revealed the economic hardships faced by families of scholarship recipients. The average annual income for these families is merely
¥1.4 million, and more than half of them (52.2%) reported being unable to purchase food due to insufficient funds in the last year. Many parents have come forward, expressing their struggles:
“There are so many things I can no longer afford due to rising prices; simply going grocery shopping has become a painful experience.”
— A mother from Niigata, in her 40s
> “The ongoing price hikes make it difficult to provide daily meals. It's rare for my children to eat three meals a day; they often suffer.”
— A mother from Okayama, in her 40s
> “All expenses, including food and utility bills, have skyrocketed, yet my wages remain stagnant.”
— A mother from Okinawa, in her 50s
These comments underline the increased demand for scholarship support amid rising living costs. Additionally, the escalating oil prices driven by heightened tensions in
Iran compound these difficulties for orphaned households.
Continued High Demand for Scholarships
The number of applications for the
Ashinaga Scholarship has remained at an all-time high for three consecutive years, rising from
1,328 applicants in 2023 to
1,800 in 2024, followed by
1,720 in 2025, and culminating in
1,819 in 2026. This persistent high represents a desperate need among those who applied, especially considering that many of the
34.7% not accepted still face significant economic pressures that necessitate financial aid.
Efforts to Extend Support
To ensure that as many students as possible are supported, the Ashinaga Student Fundraising Committee, comprising students who have received the scholarships, is mobilizing to raise awareness and funds. From
April 18, the
111th Ashinaga Student Fundraising campaign will involve street fundraising across the nation. An opening ceremony set to take place on
April 11 in
Shinjuku will feature about
30 students promoting the initiative and directly appealing for donations.
The Importance of Ashinaga Scholarships
The
Ashinaga Scholarship is designed for high school and high vocational school students who have lost parents to illness, disasters, or suicide (excluding traffic accidents) or have parents with disabilities. These students receive
¥30,000 monthly until graduation without any repayment obligations. Since the program’s inception in
1988, it has supported
4,155 individuals, contributing to a staggering
45,176 grants awarded by March 2026. The selection process involves a
pre-application for middle school students and
in-school applications for high school students, ensuring support during their critical educational phases.
Growth of the Fundraising Iniative
The Ashinaga student fundraising campaign, initiated by university scholars, has raised
¥12.3 billion since its start in
1970, providing crucial support for the educational ambitions of numerous orphans. With the decision to allocate
all funds raised in 2026 to support
Japanese orphans, the need for public donations is more pressing than ever to fulfill the educational dreams of these children.
In summary, the surge in applications for the Ashinaga Scholarship vividly illustrates the ongoing struggles faced by troubled families. We encourage everyone to contribute to this noble cause by supporting the upcoming fundraising activities and positively impacting young lives.
