Empowering Future Generations: The Impact of Reuse on Elementary School Students
On August 7th and 8th, 2026, Book Off Group Holdings hosted a remarkable event called "Reuse Day – Connecting Smiles to Power the Future" at Akiba Square, Tokyo. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about reuse among families, particularly young students and their parents. Supported by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, the event gathered a total of 514 attendees, including 262 elementary school students and their caregivers, marking a significant step towards promoting a circular economy.
Engaging Families in Reuse
The event was designed to stimulate discussions about making choices that avoid waste. Participants had the unique opportunity to engage with representatives from various reuse companies, learn about their operations, and even experience hands-on activities related to recycling and reusing products.
Across the two days, families visited booths from ten different reuse enterprises, which allowed students to understand the journey of their toys from donation to resale, assess the value of different items, and even learn about how car parts are reused. This immersive experience succeeded in not only teaching kids about reuse but also encouraging them to consider the usefulness of household items they might otherwise discard.
Results of the Event
A post-event survey revealed that all participants felt their understanding of reuse deepened, with a remarkable 98% indicating they wished to implement reuse practices at home. These statistics show a clear shift in mindset, emphasizing the event's role in fostering a culture of sustainability among younger generations.
The booths offered by various companies provided a plethora of engaging and educational experiences. For instance, Up Garage allowed students to experience the process of reusing auto parts, while Kitamura Camera provided an interactive workshop related to using vintage film cameras. Other notable activities included hands-on jewelry-making with pearls by Komehyo and learning about the significance of computers in modern recycling through Sofmap.
Practical Implementation of Reuse
The event also featured the R-LOOP, a collection box for unused clothes and toys, encouraging participants to actively contribute to the circle of reuse. Over the two-day event, 29 kilograms of items were collected, increasing awareness and promoting hands-on contribution to the recycling process among school students. Many students emotionally engaged with the concept by reflecting on their cherished toys before parting with them, showcasing the deeper connection between reuse and emotional value.
Educational Initiatives and Future Perspectives
The opening ceremony on August 7 included representatives from government and industry discussing the environmental and social implications of reuse. Engaging children, they explained how lowering greenhouse gas emissions through reuse is linked to creating a sustainable world. This was illustrated through various questions from eager young participants, enhancing the event's educational impact.
Book Off aims to carry forward this momentum, continuing to advocate for reuse within various community settings. By understanding that transitioning from luxury products to everyday items can significantly contribute to societal wellbeing, Book Off looks to expand partnerships within and beyond the community, leveraging social media and various platforms to encourage thoughtful consumer behavior.
Celebrating Reuse Day
Recognizing the importance of this initiative, the 8th of August has been declared Reuse Day, marking a unique commitment to facilitating conversations around reuse and inspiring ongoing engagement in sustainable living. This observance reflects a broader initiative that draws individuals closer to the ideals of rethinking consumerism and fostering a circular economy.
In solidifying its reputation as a leader in the reuse market, Book Off will broaden its outreach efforts to ensure that the principles of reuse resonate within every household.
