New Leadership for Tourism in U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism proudly announces
Jennifer Matarangas-King as the newly nominated Commissioner of Tourism. This exciting news was revealed by Governor
Albert Bryan Jr. during a recent press briefing at the Government House, marking a significant step forward for the territory's tourism sector.
Matarangas-King, a St. Croix native, boasts over 30 years of diverse experience in communications, public affairs, and organizational leadership within both public and private sectors. Her extensive knowledge of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ culture, coupled with her commitment to responsible growth and innovation, positions her to build upon the momentum achieved by the Department in recent years.
Governor Bryan emphasizes the critical role that tourism plays in not only the economy but also in shaping the identity of the Virgin Islands. "Tourism is more than our economy. It is how we tell our story to the world and create opportunity for the people of the Virgin Islands," he stated. He believes Matarangas-King’s strategic thinking and communication skills will serve the Department well.
During the previous tenure of
Joseph Boschulte, the Department of Tourism experienced unprecedented growth, including record-breaking numbers of air and cruise arrivals, as well as innovative marketing campaigns that enhanced the territory’s global brand. The Virgin Islands emerged as a premier travel destination even during global tourism disruptions, largely due to the proactive efforts of the Department.
"I am honored and humbled to be considered for this role," commented Matarangas-King. She sees tourism as a powerful vehicle for investment and entrepreneurship, which not only shapes the territory's future but also highlights its rich culture.
Jennifer's career in public service began with her role as press secretary to Governor
Roy Schneider. She has also served as the public relations director for Senator
Vargrave Richards. With a substantial tenure at Viya and its predecessor firms, Matarangas-King has proven her capabilities in areas such as public relations and corporate communications, playing an essential role in improving communication avenues for visitors. Her connections extend to serving as a board member of the
St. Croix Hotel Association, aligning her interests closely with those of the tourism sector.
The Department also extends its gratitude to Joseph Boschulte for his transformative leadership and commitment. In this transitional phase, Boschulte will work alongside Matarangas-King to ensure a seamless alignment of strategic objectives and operational continuity.
