Exploring Manufacturing Futures: Suruga Production Platform Hosts Middle School Students

On May 21, 2026, the Suruga Production Platform, a subsidiary of Misumi Group headquartered in Shizuoka, Japan, opened its doors to 39 students from Minami Junior High School. This event, known as an open factory, is part of a career education initiative organized by Shizuoka University aimed at exposing middle school students to local businesses and the manufacturing industry. This marks the third installment of this enriching program, which began in 2024.

The initiative aims to combat the outflow of young people from Shizuoka by allowing students to engage with industry professionals and gain firsthand experience in manufacturing. The event also featured Bertie, the mascot of the professional basketball team Vertex Shizuoka, adding a fun element to the experience. The collaboration between local businesses, universities, and sports teams provided a great opportunity for students to understand the allure of manufacturing and the career possibilities it offers.

An Insight into Suruga Production Platform's Manufacturing

The day started with an introduction to the Suruga Production Platform, which specializes in high-precision manufacturing that faces challenges like labor shortages and time constraints. The students were informed about the company's innovative approaches that leverage automation and digital technology to shorten lead times and improve productivity. The presentation included a comparison of previous and current operations, showcasing the significant advancements in the manufacturing process.

Students were visibly surprised at the evolution and improvements made within the factory. It was emphasized that Misumi Group is dedicated to supporting global manufacturing through reduced labor costs, ensured quick delivery times, and steady supply chains.

Factory Tour and Hands-On Experience

Following the introduction, the students toured the facility, starting with a look at the earthquake-resistant construction designed to ensure uninterrupted production during disasters. They received explanations about die components and even had the chance to interact with the automated manufacturing system known as ALASHI, where they manufactured punch parts while checking product accuracy. Their faces lit up as they marveled at how quickly production could occur.

Furthermore, the production line operating under the meviy digital manufacturing system was showcased. The students were impressed by the autonomous vehicles transporting materials and the various high-tech production equipment used for automated processing, machining, and quality checks. They learned how digital technology is woven into every facet of modern manufacturing through hands-on interactions and demonstrations, including a 3D printing session where they created nameplates as souvenirs of their visit.

During the Q&A session at the end of the tour, students were eager to express their newfound interest in manufacturing, with many raising their hands when asked about their enthusiasm for the field. Comments like, “I’m amazed at how efficient the process is!” resonated throughout the room, reflecting the impact of the event.

The event concluded on a high note as employees explained the capabilities of the unmanned meviy factory and students engaged with the 3D CAD software used to design a miniature version of Mt. Fuji, underlining the synergy between creativity and technology in manufacturing.
