Obesity Care Week 2026: A Call for Action to Enhance Accessibility in Obesity Care
Obesity Care Week 2026: Paving the Way for Improved Obesity Care Access
Scheduled from March 2 to March 6, 2026, Obesity Care Week (OCW) represents a crucial moment in the global dialogue around obesity treatment and care access. Initiated as a public awareness campaign, the week is designed to unite advocates, healthcare professionals, organizations, and policymakers in a common goal: to enhance the understanding and treatment of obesity worldwide.
The Importance of Accessible Care
OCW is centered on increasing awareness about the need for accessible, affordable, and evidence-based obesity care, delivered with respect for everyone involved. The week emphasizes the critical importance of elevating the voices of individuals with lived experiences of obesity, challenging the stigma associated with the condition, and working towards removing systemic barriers that prevent access to effective care.
One of the highlights of OCW will be the launch of the digital pledge, "I Commit to Care." This initiative invites individuals, healthcare providers, and decision-makers to publicly commit to enhancing obesity care. The pledge signifies a commitment to making obesity care more inclusive and respectful, in line with the campaign's overarching goal.
Educational Resources and Advocacy Opportunities
Throughout the week, participants can engage with a variety of virtual resources, educational tools, and advocacy opportunities aimed at fighting weight bias and improving access to quality treatment. Noteworthy events include a Facebook Live session focused on metabolic health, a national virtual panel discussing patient experiences and access to care, and recognition of World Obesity Day amidst organized engagements with policymakers.
Joe Nadglowski, the president and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), emphasized the necessity of accountability within this dialogue, stating, "Too many people face stigma, judgment, and barriers when seeking obesity care—and those barriers have real consequences for health." OCW strives not only to raise awareness but to actively engage stakeholders in conversations that lead to meaningful changes in policy and community awareness.
Collaborative Efforts and Support
OCW enjoys the support of a broad coalition including the Obesity Action Coalition, the Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance, The Obesity Society (TOS), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA). Over 160 champion organizations back the campaign, with sponsor support from leading companies such as Eli Lilly and Company, Genentech, and Amgen, among others.
These collaborations highlight the extensive network working together on this critical issue, showing a unified front committed to changing how obesity is addressed and ensuring that quality care is accessible to everyone.
