Okayama University Unveils Exciting Art Project for Preschool Children

On August 19, 2025, Okayama University, a leading national research university, kicked off its inaugural art initiative named "Nuritakuri Hoikushi" at Nakayoshi Kindergarten. The project, led by the Educational Psychology Laboratory under Professor Tetsuo Kiyota, saw the active participation of 18 preschoolers aged four and five from the kindergarten.

In a classroom transformed for the occasion, large white sheets covered the floor, creating a blank canvas that generated excitement among the children as they gathered to hear Professor Kiyota explain the day's activities. The project aimed to foster a newfound relationship between the children and artistic expression through the medium of paint.

The day began with the children placing their favorite colors of paint in clear files. They experimented by manipulating the paint through the files, gradually gaining confidence as they transitioned to applying the paint directly onto the large sheets beneath them or even throwing paint onto suspended clear sheets overhead. This hands-on exploration led to a flurry of excitement, and one hour into the activity, it was evident that the children were having a blast, covered from head to toe in paint while expressing their joy with shouts of "This is fun!" and "I want to do this again!".

Professor Kiyota reflected on the project, saying, "The children created a new relationship with paint. They have surely made a new friend in paint. Such experiences alter their future expressions, leading them to paint not just by 'coloring', but also by 'placing' and 'laying down' materials on paper. I am excited to see how this influences their creativity going forward."

Yumi Tamura, the assistant principal at Nakayoshi Kindergarten, echoed the sentiment, noting how the children had eagerly anticipated the event, many of whom were not directly involved but nonetheless expressed their enthusiasm and desire to participate after seeing the activity unfold. "It was a valuable time for both the children and the educators, filled with fun and new discoveries."

The art project exemplifies Okayama University's commitment to fostering creativity and creativity among its students and the community. The university continues to strive as a core institute for research and education with distinctive programs that engage with the community.

Expect further innovative programs and collaboration from Okayama University, contributing to enhanced educational experiences for children and the broader community.
