Ningbo: A Central Hub Connecting Global Manufacturing and Shipping Networks
Ningbo: A Central Hub Connecting Global Manufacturing and Shipping Networks
Ningbo, located in East China's Zhejiang Province, has emerged as a pivotal player in the global manufacturing sector. The region is known for its extensive network of factories, particularly specializing in small household appliances. A recent report sheds light on this bustling manufacturing landscape and its connection to global shipping routes.
At a small appliance factory in Cixi, rows of hair dryers come off the assembly lines, ready to be shipped to the expansive Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. This bustling maritime gateway, renowned as the world's busiest in terms of cargo throughput, plays a critical role in ensuring that Chinese products reach international markets efficiently. Within hours of production, these hair dryers are loaded onto container trucks and transported to ships destined for various regions, including Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
The view from the observation deck at Chuanshan Port captures the grandeur of this operation. Towering cranes rise through the haze, tirelessly moving containers across the sprawling docks, while massive cargo vessels await at deep-water berths. The scale of activity here reflects the importance of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, which operates 11 deep-water berths capable of handling 200,000-ton vessels around the clock. In 2025, container throughput at this port surpassed an impressive 12 million TEUs, facilitated by over 50 international shipping routes that connect to various global markets.
Zhou Chenfeng, the director of Ningbo Beilun Third Container Terminal Co, notes that local manufacturers greatly depend on the port to expand their reach into global markets. The region's strength in manufacturing and the port's infrastructure complement each other, creating a symbiotic relationship that benefits both.
Cixi itself is a hub for more than 2,000 small household appliance makers and numerous suppliers, forming a compact industrial network. Products can travel from the factory floor to the export docks in remarkably short distances. A notable player in this space is Yueli Group, recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of hair care appliances. Transitioning from exclusively producing for overseas brands, Yueli has developed its product designs and established its consumer brands. In 2025, Yueli produced a staggering 35 million appliances, including 12 million hair dryers, securing its position as one of the top hair dryer manufacturers globally.
According to Jamie Li, Yueli's marketing director, the company continues to invest heavily in research and development, launching over 40 innovative products each year. Their inventory includes high-tech hair dryers equipped with sensors and AI capabilities. This drive towards innovation is supported by a strategy that gradually shifts focus from an export-heavy model to include growth in domestic sales and brand development. Yueli's brand, ShowSee, is becoming increasingly popular in China and is poised to make inroads into Southeast Asian markets.
Alongside its growth strategy, Yueli is committed to sustainable practices, enhancing production methods through solar power, recyclable materials, and energy-efficient technologies. This reflects a broader trend where more Ningbo manufacturers, previously tied to foreign brands, are carving out their identities and establishing global brands.
Fotile, a kitchen appliance manufacturer, is another example, having pivoted from an OEM model to developing its own core technologies. Beginning with its first self-developed curved range hood in 1996, Fotile has expanded its market presence to major retailers in the US and continues to grow in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
As manufacturing evolves to become smarter and more technology-driven, the port itself implements advanced technologies. Operational decisions that once relied heavily on human judgment are now supported by data analysis and intelligent scheduling. The Chuanshan Port area has embraced 5G network coverage, enabling the remote operation of certain cranes, which contributes to enhancing loading efficiency and reducing vessel turnaround times.
Despite the shifting dynamics of global shipping, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has confidently adapted, ensuring steady operations. Zhou notes that the port continues to expand and diversify its international routes, bolstered by technological advancements that enhance efficiency and service quality. Even after nightfall, operations at the port persist, with cranes and container trucks working tirelessly around the clock.
Historically significant, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port served as a departure point for silk and porcelain along the ancient Maritime Silk Road over a millennium ago. Today, it is bustling with modern products, including hair dryers from Cixi and smart kitchen appliances manufactured in Ningbo, setting sail on new shipping routes to global markets. This metamorphosis illustrates not only the strength of Ningbo's manufacturing capabilities but also its integral role in connecting local industries to the farthest corners of the world.
