Ohio Faces Rising Gambling Issues Amid Major Sports Events This April
Ohio Faces Gambling Challenges
As April approaches, Ohio is on the brink of several major sports events, including the NCAA Final Four, the NFL Draft, and the commencement of the Major League Baseball season. While these occasions typically spark excitement among fans, they also bring a concerning rise in gambling activity, as warned by experts in the field of problem gambling.
Statistics reveal a staggering increase in the rate of problem gambling in Ohio—surging from just 0.4% in 2012 to 2.8% in 2022. This escalation translates to roughly 255,000 adults grappling with gambling issues, roughly equating to the entire population of Toledo. Derek Longmeier, Executive Director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, emphasizes that this alarming trend may still be underestimated as recent advancements in sports betting and technology are not yet captured in the data, which only collects information every five years.
“With the rise of mobile sports betting and new platforms, the potential for problem gambling is expanding at an exponential rate, especially as we enter a busy sports calendar,” Longmeier stated.
One of the reasons behind this upward trajectory is the expanded accessibility of gambling. Major League Baseball has partnered with Polymarket, creating an official prediction market exchange, thus increasing opportunities for fans to engage in betting. The NFL Draft alone attracted 13.6 million viewers during its first round, amplifying the reach and visibility of gambling promotions. A recent national poll revealed that 62% of Americans are concerned that gambling advertisements are influencing young audiences.
This year, Americans are projected to wager an astounding $3.3 billion on the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. This figure marks a dramatic 54% increase over the last three years as indicated by the American Gaming Association.
Longmeier advocates for the importance of understanding safe gambling practices, stating, “We know that increased opportunities lead to more gambling. Therefore, our mission is to equip Ohioans with the knowledge of setting reasonable limits and recognizing when gambling veers into problematic territory. There is help and hope available.”
To address this growing issue, Ohio has launched the “Pause Before You Play” campaign aimed at raising awareness about the risks of gambling. This statewide initiative encourages individuals to set their own limits regarding the amount of time and money they spend on sports betting or other forms of gambling.
For those feeling overwhelmed or concerned, resources are available through GamblingHelpOhio.org, which provides confidential and stigma-free access to various services, including financial counseling and individual or group therapy.
