DigiTruck by Huawei Celebrates 290 Graduates in Kenya

On March 17, 2025, a significant milestone was achieved by Huawei's DigiTruck initiative in Homa Bay, Kenya, as it celebrated the graduation of 290 young graduates equipped with essential digital skills. This milestone is part of Huawei's TECH4ALL digital inclusion initiative, which aims to empower youth with the skills necessary to thrive in today's digital landscape.

The program, which is designed to reach underserved and remote communities, saw 143 young women and 147 young men complete a rigorous six-week training course that equipped them with essential skills in computer knowledge, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary of the Kenyan State Department for Interior Security, emphasized the critical nature of digital skills in today's economy, stating, "Digital skills are not optional; they are a necessity."

The DigiTruck, a fully solar-powered mobile classroom equipped with workstations and internet access, has been traveling to remote areas since its launch in 2019. It has played a vital role in transforming the lives of over 6,030 young individuals across 36 counties, focusing on youth employment seekers, girls, and women. Notably, in 2024 alone, over half of the trainees, amounting to 906 out of 1,648, were women, highlighting the commitment to gender equality in digital empowerment.

Adam Lane, Huawei’s Director of Government Affairs and Policy, expressed pride in the partnership which includes over 60 universities and local organizations. "We are dedicated to ensuring equal participation among our trainees, recognizing that digital skills are essential for everyone in today’s economy."

The DigiTruck initiative is more than just a training program; it is part of a broader strategy to foster economic transformation in Kenya. By integrating training efforts with community engagement activities, such as innovation challenges that prompt participants to develop solutions to local issues, the project encourages entrepreneurship and promotes digital adoption. The competition held in Homa Bay, for example, inspired graduates to create digital solutions aimed at improving healthcare service delivery and enhancing online safety awareness.

The impact of DigiTruck is expected to resonate well beyond individual graduates. The program aims to significantly increase enrollment in information technology courses, stimulate digital entrepreneurship, and foster higher levels of digital literacy in rural areas. As a segment of Huawei's Skills on Wheels initiative under TECH4ALL, the DigiTruck is on track to reach over 110,000 individuals across 20 countries by the end of 2024. The mobile classrooms have collectively traveled over 50,000 kilometers, highlighting Huawei's commitment to bridging the digital divide.
