Claros Technologies Achieves a Milestone in PFAS Destruction
Claros Technologies, based in Minneapolis, has recently marked a significant achievement in environmental technology. In collaboration with Daikin America, Inc., the company has successfully executed the world’s first large-scale demonstration of high-throughput destruction of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) at Daikin's facility in Decatur, Alabama. This landmark pilot project represents a major step towards effectively and affordably eliminating PFAS from industrial wastewater streams.
The Technology
During this groundbreaking pilot, Claros employed its exclusive UV photochemical process, which demonstrated remarkable efficiency by destroying over 99.99% of targeted PFAS compounds. This was accomplished while treating more than 50,000 gallons of wastewater through a high-flow system capable of handling hundreds of gallons per minute. This not only showcases the technology's potential for large-scale implementation but also indicates its viability as a cost-effective solution in environmental remediation.
A Breakthrough in Environmental Safety
Since 2012, Daikin has managed to achieve a 99.9% reduction of long-chain PFAS in its wastewater treatment process. This latest pilot project provides evidence that the destruction of long, short, and ultra-short chain PFAS using the UV technology is not only technically feasible but also economically beneficial. Claros’ success in achieving over 99.99% destruction of targeted PFAS compounds in high-throughput settings sets a new standard for potential industrial adoption.
Michelle Bellanca, the CEO and co-founder of Claros Technologies, emphasized the crucial partnership with Daikin, stating: “We are honored to partner with Daikin on this innovative initiative. Their vision, leadership, and willingness to invest in next-generation solutions made this achievement possible. This pilot not only proves that large-scale destruction of PFAS is viable today but establishes a new benchmark for environmental sustainability in the manufacturing sector. Claros is proud to demonstrate the possibilities when innovation is matched with bold and forward-thinking action.”
Looking Ahead: Commercialization and Future Projects
With the successful completion of this initial pilot project, both Claros and Daikin are excited to pursue further pilot projects and collaborations. The next phase of this innovation journey will focus on enhancing flow capabilities and destruction efficiency of the technology. As they advance, the aim will be to increase scalability and to drive down costs to ensure accessibility for wider industrial applications.
