From Crystal Pyramid to Solar Candlelight: Eastern Wisdom in Paris

A Glimpse into Eastern Aesthetics: CIGA Design at Maison&Objet

On September 4, 2025, the prestigious Maison&Objet fair opened in Villepinte, Paris, and all eyes were drawn to the remarkable "Glowing Pyramid". This stunning installation was brought to life by renowned Chinese designer Zhang Jianmin, the founder of CIGA Design, in a partnership with the World Organization for Ecological Design. A tribute to the iconic Louvre Pyramid designed by I. M. Pei, this installation featured 1,000 solar-powered candles, seamlessly merging ancient eastern wisdom with contemporary design.

Bridging Cultures Through Design

The impact of I. M. Pei's crystal pyramid, once criticized in 1989 for allegedly destroying history, transitioned into a cultural symbol that encapsulates both ancient heritage and modern minimalism. It embodies the eastern principle of balance between emptiness and form. Zhang Jianmin extends this narrative with an innovative design that speaks not just to aesthetics, but to sustainability and global connectivity.

In today’s context, Zhang’s creation invites us to rethink the role of light, simplicity, and ecological responsibility in design.

Embracing Shared Human Responsibility

Zhang's solar candles symbolize warmth in both eastern and western cultures. They serve as beacons of ecological accountability, embodying the transition from traditional candlelight to a sustainable, zero-emission alternative. Each candle flickers with the allure of a real flame, creating a familiar ambiance sans actual fire or smoke—an advancement warmly received by many fair visitors.

A French designer aptly remarked, “This glow communicates tenderness and environmental responsibility.” This design acts as a bridge that unites cultures through the shared experience of light and warmth.

Merging Nature with Technology

What sets Zhang's solar candles apart from conventional electronic versions is their direct connection to nature’s warmth and rhythm. With changing light tones and dancing flames, these solar candles harness sunlight to provide safe, environmentally friendly illumination, effectively marrying daily utility with natural beauty. This innovation ensures that the tangible elegance of nature can smoothly integrate into modern life without compromising environmental integrity.

A Gen-Bridge of Originality and Vision

Choosing Paris as the backdrop for this design dialogue carries significant weight. Not only does it pay homage to I. M. Pei's legacy, but it resonates deeply with France's commitment to ecological leadership on the global stage. Zhang’s work embodies the evolution of eastern design, presenting it not just as a regional expression, but as a vital participant in the global dialogue on sustainability.

From Pei’s architectural achievements to Zhang’s environmentally conscious artistry, the event highlighted the growing recognition and trust in eastern creativity while strengthening the intercultural ties between China and France.

In conclusion, the installation of 1,000 solar candles not only illuminated Paris but also served as a gentle reminder of our collective responsibility towards sustainability and caring for our shared home. As the fair progressed, it became evident that the marriage of traditional wisdom and modern technology could foster a brighter, sustainable future.
