Butter Takes Center Stage This Holiday Season
As the holidays approach, a new star is set to grace the dinner table: butter. Families across the United States are leaning into this creamy delight as the essential ingredient to elevate their holiday dishes. A recent survey conducted by Talker Research, representing the food solutions company SpartanNash, underlines the significant role butter plays in festive cooking and baking.
Holiday Statistics and Trends
According to the survey, the average American household consumes an impressive
two sticks of butter each week, tallying up to
26 pounds a year. This amount significantly increases during the holidays, with homes using an estimated
five sticks of butter for seasonal feasts. Notably, younger generations, especially
Gen Z and Millennials, lead the pack in butter consumption, acknowledging it as their kitchen secret weapon for holiday recipes. An overwhelming
80% of survey respondents declared butter as their go-to ingredient for creating memorable holiday meals.
Erin Storm, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of SpartanNash, states, "Butter is a kitchen staple all year long, but it shines brightest during the holidays. Whether you're baking delicious cookies, dressing up turkey, or indulging in buttered toast, one thing is clear: butter makes everything better!"

Last-Minute Butter Runs
The survey also highlighted a familiar scenario during this busy season: nearly
60% of Americans admitted to making last-minute grocery runs solely for butter. When stocks run low, approximately
70% rush to the closest store, while others call a friend or order delivery. Only a brave
15% consider substitutes – a risky maneuver in any holiday kitchen, as many will attest that margarine just doesn't cut it.
The survey revealed some interesting butter etiquette too. More than
60% believe that leaving crumbs in the butter dish is a culinary faux pas, while nearly
70% agree that butter should reside in the refrigerator. Yet, a surprising
27% concede to letting it warm on the counter, indicating some flexibility in butter storage!
A Deep Connection to Butter
The findings also painted a picture of America's deep-seated love for butter, with
72% of respondents affirming they can’t live without it. Over half also confidently labeled themselves “experts” on all things butter, likely drawing from their experience in the kitchen and a lifelike love for this creamy delight.
In preparation for the holiday season, SpartanNash suggests consumers visit
their website to discover where they can find these scrumptious flavored butters. From enhancing dishes to simply enjoying a spread on warm bread, these butters promise to add richness and flavor to every holiday celebration.
