Exploring the Whimsical World of TROLLS at Frederik Meijer Gardens This Spring

A Whimsical Journey: TROLLS at Frederik Meijer Gardens

Next spring, visitors to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park will be treated to an extraordinary exhibition titled TROLLS: A Field Study, launching on May 14, 2027. This whimsical outdoor showcase will feature 12 oversized troll sculptures, meticulously crafted from reclaimed materials like fallen branches and pallets. Presented by Macatawa Bank and powered by Wintrust, the exhibition will run until October 31, 2027.

The exhibition represents the first traveling showcase of renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo in Michigan, highlighting the interplay between art, nature, and sustainability. Each troll has its own unique personality. Among them is their fearless leader, Taks, who embarks on a curious journey to learn about human life and environment. As visitors stroll through the garden, they will experience the trolls observing and reflecting on the intricacies of humanity, providing an imaginative perspective that aims to spark laughter and curiosity among families and individuals alike.

Carol Kendra, Chief Operating Officer of Frederik Meijer Gardens, expresses her excitement about the exhibition. She notes that it's not only suitable for families and couples but also a captivating experience for anyone ready for adventure. The TROLLS exhibition invites audiences to engage with both the art pieces and the natural environment, fostering a deeper appreciation for both while promoting a message of recycling and ecological consciousness.

Thomas Dambo is celebrated for his ability to connect people with nature through large-scale art installations. His mission extends beyond aesthetics; it aims to inspire creative exploration, encourage outdoors interaction, and instill a sense of environmental responsibility. This exhibition aligns perfectly with the mission of Frederik Meijer Gardens, which focuses on curiosity, discovery, and appreciation for the natural world.

In collaboration with Imagine, the organization behind creating immersive experiences, Dambo's vision is brought to life, allowing visitors to revel in an enchanting outdoor spectacle. Imagine President and CEO, Tom Zaller, expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Dambo to realize this imaginative project, highlighting its potential to create unforgettable moments that educate and inspire audiences.

The trolls serve as reminders of our relationship with the earth and aim to inspire reflection on how individuals can contribute to caring for shared spaces. Attention to nature's beauty, alongside the artistic element of the sculptures, invites viewers to look more closely at their surroundings, instilling a sense of wonder and adventure in all attendees.

The exhibition not only showcases art but also carries an underlying narrative about using recycled materials to create something magnificent. Accompanying the exhibit is a book capturing the trolls' journey from their perspective, presenting an engaging story about the relationship between humans and nature.

With a track record of creating awe-inspiring installations in over 17 countries, Thomas Dambo's work has successfully encouraged millions to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world.
