Honoring the Courage of Student-Athletes
On February 12, 2026, the Atlanta Tipoff Club (ATOC) announced the recipients of the prestigious Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award. This recognition celebrates two exceptional student-athletes, Collin Hughes from Vance Charter School in Henderson, NC, and Maekhiya Rameau from Sandusky High School in Sandusky, OH. This award is dedicated to recognizing high school athletes who demonstrate extraordinary courage, leadership, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
The Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award, established in 2020, seeks to uplift individuals who have made a significant impact not only in sports but also in their communities. Selected from a pool of ten finalists nominated by coaches, athletic directors, and parents from across the country, both winners showcased remarkable resilience through their unique challenges.
Collin Hughes, a senior at Vance Charter School, represents the true spirit of this award. In March 2024, he faced a life-altering diagnosis of Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA), a rare and serious blood disorder. As his hemoglobin levels dropped to a dangerously low level, Collin underwent numerous hospital stays, chemotherapy treatments, and blood transfusions. The physical toll of his condition was immense, leading to muscle loss and a protracted recovery.
Despite these obstacles, Hughes’s passion for basketball never waned. He committed himself to returning to the court. Rising before dawn for training, he endured long commutes for practice, demonstrating his unwavering dedication and work ethic. His efforts culminated in a triumphant comeback, as he not only reclaimed his starting position on the team but also helped lead Vance Charter School to its first conference championship, overcoming mid-season health setbacks along the way.
On the other hand, Maekhiya Rameau’s story highlights resilience in the face of chronic instability. Since her freshman year, Maekhiya and her family have navigated the challenges of homelessness, living in cars, hotels, and with relatives. Through these difficulties, she remained steadfast in her commitment to her education and her basketball team.
Now a senior, Rameau has emerged as a role model for her peers, using her lived experiences to inspire others. She has channeled her struggles into motivation, becoming a strong leader while advocating for those facing similar challenges. Her journey underscores the importance of perseverance and determination, providing a powerful example of overcoming life’s obstacles.
The ATOC recognized both winners during school celebrations attended by friends and family. In acknowledgment of their achievements, Jersey Mike's donated $2,000 to each honoree's basketball program and awarded an additional $5,000 directly to each student.
Eric Oberman, President of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, stated, "Collin and Maekhiya exemplify the essence of this award—strength, resilience, and a commitment to leadership amidst extraordinary challenges. Their stories remind us that true courage extends beyond the game, manifesting in everyday determination and heart."
Jeff Hemschoot, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Jersey Mike's, added, "At Jersey Mike's, we are continually inspired by student-athletes who rise above adversity. Collin and Maekhiya embody the true spirit of the Naismith Courage Award, exemplifying their impact on their communities."
