Wings for Life World Run 2026 Raises Record €9.2 Million for Spinal Cord Injury Research
The Wings for Life World Run took place this past Sunday, bringing together 346,527 participants from 192 nationalities across 173 countries, all united for a common cause. This monumental event raised an impressive €9.2 million, marking a record amount for spinal cord injury research. The 13th edition of the run began simultaneously at 11:00 UTC, featuring seven main events, 648 app-based running events, and the global Wings for Life running app.
All registration fees and donations collected during the run will be directed to the Wings for Life Foundation, known for its commitment to finding cures for spinal cord injuries. According to the World Health Organization, spinal cord injuries present around 500,000 new cases worldwide each year, yet research in this domain continues to be significantly underfunded. Founded in 2004 and based in Salzburg, Austria, Wings for Life has supported 344 peer-reviewed research projects globally and currently backs 72 active projects in 15 countries, guided by a renowned scientific advisory board and a group of 737 expert evaluators.
The event saw historical achievements as well, with Jo Fukuda from Japan setting a new men’s world record by running 78.95 km in Fukuoka, and Mikky Keetels from the Netherlands establishing a new women’s world record at 62.24 km in Breda. Across the globe, participants collectively covered 2,889,278.26 km.
Christian Göritz, PhD, a lead researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and a recipient of funds from Wings for Life, expressed profound gratitude for community support, stating, "Everything that is collected goes directly to the cause; nothing is wasted. As a researcher working daily on spinal cord injuries, seeing such a level of support is incredibly powerful. Spinal cord injuries cannot be solved alone. What makes this event so special is that everyone can participate, regardless of their level of ability, and every contribution truly matters."
The Wings for Life World Run employs a unique 'Catcher Car' format, featuring a mobile finish line that sets off 30 minutes after the global start time, allowing runners, walkers, and wheelchair users to join in the same race.
Wings for Life emphasizes the importance of direct funding for spinal cord injury research, as it remains one of the most underfunded areas in medical research. This innovative fundraising model ensures that every donation plays a critical role in advancing new therapies. You can find additional media assets related to this event through the Red Bull Content Pool.
Overall, the success of the 2026 run illustrates the power of community and the impact of collective action towards addressing serious medical challenges. With enthusiastic participation and significant fundraising, Wings for Life continues to lead the charge in spinal cord injury research, striving for a future where effective treatments become a reality for those affected by such injuries.
