National Kidney Foundation Launches "Kidney Hero of the Year" Campaign

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has proudly announced the launch of its first-ever Kidney Hero of the Year campaign, marking a significant step in recognizing the extraordinary contributions of individuals within the kidney community. This campaign aims to celebrate seven remarkable nominees known for their courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those affected by kidney disease.

Nominees for this year's campaign include a diverse group represented by living kidney donors, transplant recipients, patient advocates, and dedicated healthcare professionals. Each nominee has demonstrated exceptional efforts in enhancing the lives of individuals impacted by kidney disease through advocacy, volunteer work, educational outreach, or personal acts of generosity.

Throughout the campaign, each nominee has been assigned a unique fundraising page designed to rally support for their individual stories. Supporters are encouraged to honor their favorite nominee by making donations, with each contribution serving as a vote for the nominee they believe embodies the true spirit of a Kidney Hero. All proceeds from the campaign support the NKF's mission to transform the fight against kidney disease, foster innovation in kidney solutions, and promote access to equitable healthcare.

According to Larry, a kidney transplant recipient and one of the nominees, "Being nominated for the NKF's first Kidney Hero of the Year is a tremendous honor. A few years ago, I was desperately trying to stay healthy while praying for a kidney transplant. Now, I share my journey to inspire others, raise awareness about kidney disease and organ donation, and to remind everyone to persevere on their path. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and the support I've received from so many."

Leah, another nominee and a childhood kidney disease advocate, expressed her gratitude, stating, "There are so many kidney warriors who deserve recognition. Being acknowledged as a nominee is a heartfelt honor. We are immensely thankful to belong to such a supportive community and wish to share hope and encouragement with those facing similar challenges."

The Kidney Hero of the Year campaign will culminate on August 18, coinciding with Kidney Heroes Giving Day, where the nominee who garners the most community support will be crowned the inaugural Kidney Hero of the Year. The winner will be announced on August 19 and will be celebrated across NKF's national communication channels.

Meet the 2026 Kidney Hero of the Year Nominees

This year's nominees are a testament to the strength and resilience found in the kidney community. Each story embodies advocacy, commitment, and hope:

1. Melanie: Kidney Disease Advocate and Transplant Recipient

Melanie's kidney journey began unexpectedly during her college years when routine blood work revealed her kidney issues. After discovering she had lupus and lupus nephritis, Melanie faced numerous challenges but found solace in sharing her experiences on social media, thereby creating a supportive community for others experiencing similar health battles. She received a kidney transplant this January and continues to empower others through education and advocacy.

2. Larry: Kidney Transplant Recipient and Health Advocate

Larry’s health alarming revelation came during a routine eye exam that led to a diagnosis of stage 4 kidney disease. Following a transformative journey of lifestyle adjustments, he was granted a living donor kidney in June 2025. Today, Larry is passionate about encouraging others to prioritize kidney health and explore their options for treatment.

3. Tayler and Billy Ransome: Childhood Kidney Disease Advocates

When their son, Sullivan, was born with a rare kidney condition, the Ransome family faced overwhelming medical challenges. Despite the difficulties, they provided him the best life possible. After a successful kidney transplant in 2025, they share their family’s journey to offer hope to others navigating similar circumstances.

4. Erròn: Kidney Transplant Recipient and Living Donation Advocate

Erròn’s life took a drastic turn when high blood pressure led him to seek medical help during the pandemic. Through community support, Erròn found a living donor and received a transplant in 2021. Now, he advocates for living kidney donation awareness, particularly within Black communities.

5. Reggie: Kidney Transplant Recipient and Childhood Kidney Disease Advocate

Diagnosed with ANCA vasculitis at a young age, Reggie faced rigorous medical procedures while continuing her passions. After finding a living donor through outreach efforts, she received her transplant and now shares her story to inspire hope and positivity among children facing kidney challenges.

6. Joanna Neumann: Kidney Care Professional and Community Advocate

Joanna has devoted her career to advancing kidney care since becoming a nurse in 1983. She empowers patients with education and leads initiatives to enhance kidney health in her community while advocating for patient-centered care.

7. Bernie and Hope: Living Donation Champions

After years of living with kidney disease, Bernie found a living donor in Hope, who generously stepped forward. Their story has evolved from a life-saving connection to a partnership dedicated to service and advocacy.
