Estée Collaborates with SMBC to Create Unique Hinoki Oil Fragrance Cards

In a remarkable collaboration aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, Estée Corporation and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) have unveiled a unique fragrance card crafted from Hinoki oil sourced from the SMBC Forest in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. This initiative reflects both companies' commitment to conserving forests and utilizing resources more efficiently.

The SMBC Forest, located in Isehara City, receives careful management for sustainability, enabling the extraction of Hinoki oil from thinned branches and leaves that would otherwise go to waste. By repurposing these materials, Estée not only transforms them into an aromatic experience but also supports SMBC’s efforts to enhance public understanding of resource circulation and forest conservation.

The development of these fragrance cards employs technology from Estée's wholly-owned subsidiary, Code Mi, demonstrating innovative practices in the fragrance industry. These cards, infused with the pleasing scent of Hinoki, are designed to provide a sensory experience to users, illustrating the potential for new uses of forest-derived resources.

To realize this project, Estée utilized its patented low-pressure microwave steam distillation technology. This method significantly reduces energy consumption compared to traditional steam distillation techniques, playing a crucial role in minimizing CO2 emissions and thus lessening the overall environmental impact.

The collaboration supports SMBC’s broader aim of fostering a Nature Positive and decarbonized society by highlighting the significance of responsibly managing forest resources. The original fragrance designed for the cards not only serves as a delightful sensory product but also signifies a new path for sustainability in the fragrance realm.

Estée remains dedicated to making effective use of underutilized materials like thinned timber, and through this partnership, it aims to bolster SMBC’s initiatives aimed at resource circulation and forest preservation. This ongoing commitment aligns with Estée’s mid-term management plan, "SMILE 2027," which emphasizes the intersection of fragrance and wellness. The company is pursuing solutions to social issues in the wellness sector by leveraging its expertise in aromas and collaborating with enterprises and communities.

Furthermore, the SMBC Forest encompasses approximately 220 hectares in the Hinata region of Isehara City. This forest serves as a green asset to combat global warming and preserve biodiversity. SMBC has implemented several programs, such as biodiversity maintenance based on vegetation surveys, creating forest-derived credits, establishing environmental education websites, and reviving forestry through biomass power generation.

Through the fragrance card initiative, Estée and SMBC are setting a noteworthy example of how businesses can unite to address pressing environmental issues and create innovative products that resonate with sustainability. This partnership not only enhances the consumer experience through delightful scents but also anchors both companies' reputations as leaders in ecological responsibility and community engagement.
