Toyota Boshoku America's 5.7-MW Solar Project: A Sustainable Future

Marking a Milestone in Sustainable Manufacturing

Toyota Boshoku America (TBA) recently celebrated a significant achievement in the quest for sustainable manufacturing with the completion of a 5.7-megawatt solar project at its manufacturing plant in Lawrenceville, Illinois. This innovative project, developed in collaboration with Onyx Renewables and other partners including Sol Systems and Nelnet Renewable Energy, aims to fulfill approximately 85% of the electrical energy needs of TBA's Illinois facility.

The unveiling of the solar array was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by key stakeholders, highlighting the synergy between manufacturers and clean energy developers. With the price of energy rising and the urgency to address carbon emissions pressing, TBA proactively sought solutions that not only stabilize energy costs but also align with its sustainability targets. This project represents TBA's largest on-site solar installation to date and serves as a pivotal step towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Anna Toenjes, Associate Vice President at Sol Systems, remarked, "This project demonstrates the possibilities that arise when manufacturers, clean energy developers, and local communities unite for shared goals." The project is forecasted to generate over 9.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity in its first year, underlining TBA's commitment to adopting environmentally responsible practices. Kenji Sugito, President of TBA, stated, "We view it as our responsibility to minimize our environmental impact. With this solar panel system, we are advancing towards a more sustainable manufacturing process."

The solar project not only represents a substantial increase in TBA's commitment to clean energy but also aims to provide local job opportunities, enhance workforce development, and promote biodiversity. To ensure environmental stewardship, the project has allocated at least 15% of its labor for qualified apprentices and includes initiatives to create a pollinator-friendly habitat around the solar array. This initiative reflects TBA's focus on sustainability and commitment to improving local ecosystems.

Ryan Hunt, Vice President of TBA, emphasized that this project is part of a broader ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. He highlighted the collaboration between TBA, Onyx Renewables, Sol Systems, and Nelnet as a model for integrating clean energy solutions into manufacturing. This partnership is designed to lower energy costs while facilitating community economic growth within Lawrenceville.

Onyx Renewables played a vital role in finalizing the project's development and construction phases, ensuring that it benefits not just TBA but the surrounding community as well. As the owner and operator of the solar project, Onyx will guarantee the ongoing provision of affordable clean energy to TBA's manufacturing facility. Patty Rollin, Chief Commercial Officer at Onyx Renewables, remarked, "This collaborative clean energy development sets a standard for effective public support and emission reductions."

Furthermore, the project has gained additional recognition as an "energy community" due to economic factors such as local unemployment and fossil fuel employment rates, reflecting a concerted effort to bring clean energy into areas that historically depended on fossil fuels.

Overall, Toyota Boshoku’s solar project in Illinois is more than just an energy initiative; it signifies a major move towards sustainability in manufacturing. As companies across industries seek effective ways to combat climate change and drive down operational costs, TBA's efforts serve as a beacon for the automotive sector and beyond. By investing in renewable energy, TBA sets the stage for a greener and more sustainable future.
