São Paulo Achieves GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ for Largest Municipal Food Security Program

On December 3, 2025, the city of São Paulo proudly accepted the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for establishing the largest municipal food security program worldwide. This recognition highlights São Paulo as a leading model for food security, ensuring ongoing access to dignified nutrition for its citizens. The accolade came as a result of a rigorous audit confirming the distribution of 933.8 tons of food within just 24 hours, with the city managing to provide over 3 million meals every single day.

Mayor Ricardo Nunes received the Guinness certificate from representative Camila Borenstain during a ceremony held in Paraisópolis, one of the city's underserved communities. The World Health Organization regards food security as a fundamental human right, underscoring the importance of this achievement.

The municipality's robust food security network guarantees the distribution of prepared meals, fresh produce, and essential food baskets. An official verification event took place on November 25, coinciding with the 'Food Security Day', which saw participation from over 5,600 voting locations throughout the city and around 1,500 volunteers on the streets.

During the certificate presentation, Mayor Nunes emphasized how this honor signifies São Paulo's commitment to solidarity, hospitality, and caring for its citizens. "This accomplishment holds significant meaning. Only those who have felt hunger can truly understand the weight of such a powerful food program," he stated.

Among the many critiques supporting this record, the daily provision of five meals to over a million students in the municipal school system stood out. In early childhood education, around 325,000 children receive monthly milk delivery.

To address social vulnerabilities directly, São Paulo distributes 421,000 essential food baskets monthly through its Cestas Básicas (Basic Baskets) and Cidade Solidária (Solidarity City) programs. Moreover, the network includes Bom Prato Paulistano, providing 7,000 affordable meals daily, and the Rede Cozinha Escola (School Kitchens Network), which serves 26,000 meals daily while offering vocational training. The Rede Cozinha Cidadã (Citizen Kitchens Network) also plays a crucial role, delivering 15,000 meals each day to the outskirts of the city.

These initiatives are further supported by the Armazéns Solidários (Solidarity Warehouses), providing up to 50% discounts on essential food products for beneficiaries of the CadÚnico program, as well as the Banco de Alimentos (Food Bank), which donates 55 tons of food products monthly to social institutions. This multifaceted approach ensures that the most vulnerable populations in São Paulo receive the help they need, transforming the city into an international reference for food security programs.

The record-breaking achievement serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the effectiveness of public policy dedicated to ensuring that no one in São Paulo goes hungry, reinforcing the sentiment that food security is a right that every individual deserves.
