First Responders Children's Foundation Awards Over $900,000 in Scholarships

The First Responders Children's Foundation (FRCF) is making waves in educational support by announcing the allocation of $905,943 in scholarships dedicated to the children of first responders. This announcement comes as part of their continued effort to honor the families of those who protect and serve our communities. In 2026, the organization will provide academic scholarships to 249 students from 41 states, enabling them to pursue higher education and achieve their personal and academic goals.

Founded in response to the tragic loss of a significant number of first responders during 9/11, the FRCF has become a vital resource for the families of emergency service personnel, providing educational assistance aimed at ensuring these families thrive despite the challenges they face.

A Commitment to Education

With over 900 applications received, the selection process was intensive. Scholarships were awarded across a spectrum of educational paths, including four-year colleges, community colleges, and trade schools. This year, an impressive 72% of recipients are returning applicants, showcasing FRCF's commitment to long-term support for these students. However, only 27% of all applicants were granted scholarships, highlighting a pressing demand for financial assistance.

Scholar Highlights

1. Returning Scholars: Out of the 249 awarded scholarships, 180 are returning recipients benefiting from ongoing FRCF support, amounting to almost $639,000.
2. Diverse Educational Aims: Of the total scholarships, 79% are designated for undergraduate education, 18% for graduate programs, and 3% for community colleges or trade schools.
3. Heartfelt Connections: Among the recipients, 47 have tragically lost a parent, with 44 of those losses occurring in the line of duty, underscoring the profound impact these programs have on families directly affected by the risks of first responder work.
4. Local Focus: Notably, 24 recipients are children of NYPD officers, receiving a total of $73,000, while 30 are children of FDNY first responders, receiving $109,500, maintaining FRCF's strong legacy of support for New York City first responder families.
