West Virginia American Water Undertakes Major Infrastructure Project
West Virginia American Water has recently announced a significant investment of $275,000 to enhance water infrastructure on Thompson Avenue in Bluefield. This proactive initiative reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining and improving the reliability and resilience of its water systems across the state.
Scott Wyman, President of West Virginia American Water, emphasized the importance of such continuous investments: "Ongoing, proactive investments are critical to help maintain and improve the reliability and resiliency of our systems." This infrastructure upgrade on Thompson Avenue is designed to provide safe, dependable water service to the residents of Bluefield.
The project will specifically focus on a section of Thompson Avenue, extending from Walton Avenue to Maryland Avenue. During this venture, crews will be replacing 600 feet of outdated pipelines with new 2-inch PVC main pipes. The construction is expected to be wrapped up by the end of October, with final street restoration scheduled for fall 2026. Work will be conducted from Monday to Friday between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM, during which time traffic restrictions will be in place.
This project is part of a broader plan by West Virginia American Water to invest over $129 million in water infrastructure initiatives throughout the state in 2026. Research indicates that such investments yield substantial economic benefits; for instance, every $1 million allocated towards water infrastructure can create more than 10 jobs within local economies.
In the past decade alone, West Virginia American Water has committed over $805 million to infrastructure projects, addressing the pressing need for upgrades throughout the Mountain State.
