FONAREV Launches Historic Initiative to Support Victims of Sexual Violence in DRC

FONAREV Unveils Groundbreaking Initiative to Support Victims of Sexual Violence in the DRC

In a historic step towards justice, FONAREV—the National Fund for the Reparations of Victims of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence—has been established in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This initiative comes in response to over three decades of conflict that have left more than 10 million individuals suffering from the consequences of sexual violence associated with conflict. The governing body of FONAREV aims to provide vital recognition and support for these survivors, formalizing their rights under the recently enacted Law No. 22/06.

President Félix Tshisekedi underscored the urgency of reforming the narrative surrounding victims, stating, "We must transform pain into restored dignity, silence into speech, and commitments into concrete reparations." This sentiment echoes through the corridors of power, championed by the First Lady, Madame Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, a relentless advocate for survivors' rights and the United Nations Global Champion for the Prevention of Sexual Violence. She proclaimed the need for justice is paramount, making it clear that without accountability, similar tragedies could occur again.

The scars left by conflict-related sexual violence go beyond individual trauma; they permeate the fabric of society, leading to profound psychological impacts, social isolation, and economic instability. Survivors often face ostracization from their communities and families, leading to generations of suffering that challenge the dignity of the entire nation.

To bring international attention to these issues, FONAREV has announced a high-profile conference timed with the 80th United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 22, 2025, in New York City. The event aims to focus on the urgent need for accountability and justice for victims. Accreditations for the press will be available, ensuring media coverage that amplifies the voices of those most affected.

Art for Peace and Resilience Exhibition

As a corollary to this initiative, FONAREV introduces the exhibit titled Art for Peace and Resilience. Set to take place from September 23rd to 26th at 15 E 40th Street, New York, NY 10016, the exhibition showcases the works of Congolese artists curated by Aimé Mpane. This exhibition is integral in creating dialogue and understanding around the themes of resilience and hope. Art will serve as a conduit for storytelling, transcending the limits of verbal expression to convey the pain and strength of survivors.

The selection of artists from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa signifies an effort to construct a collective narrative that emphasizes not only the grievous histories but also the power of resilience among victims. The Director General of FONAREV, Patrick Fata, articulated this vision by stating, "Genocost is not just a concept; it embodies our responsibility to acknowledge suffering, recognize truth, and strive for reparations. Memory is a right, and honoring the deceased mandates that we approach history with both courage and truth."

Conclusion

With support from government bodies and international communities, FONAREV is poised to make significant strides in addressing the deep-rooted issues of sexual violence in the DRC. This initiative not only validates the experiences of countless survivors but also symbolizes a commitment to creating a future where such violence is neither tolerated nor forgotten. The upcoming conference and art exhibition serve as critical platforms for awareness, healing, and mobilization aimed at fostering peace and resilience within the DRC and beyond.
