Kuradashi's Acquisition of Chukyo Electric: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy
In a significant move within the Japanese energy sector, Kuradashi Inc. has officially decided to acquire all issued shares of Chukyo Electric Co., based in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. This transition, finalized on May 29, 2026, marks a strategic step in Kuradashi's expansion into the renewable energy landscape. The share transfer is expected to take place on June 9, 2026.
Background of the Acquisition
Kuradashi, led by CEO Kohei Kawamura and headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has a mission to ``bring fruitful futures through good business.`` Since its inception, the company has developed socially responsible and environmentally sustainable business models primarily within the food sector. With the launch of its renewable energy division,
Kuradashi Energy, in January 2025, the company has taken proactive steps towards a more sustainable future, including the successful operation of its first battery storage project in Tochigi.
The Japanese electricity retail market has experienced substantial diversification since its complete deregulation in 2016, with the number of registered operators increasing to 761 (as per METI). After a tough period characterized by soaring fuel prices, the market share for new power companies has rebounded to 20%. As new data centers emerge and digital transformation accelerates, a surge in electricity demand is anticipated, providing opportunities for new entrants. However, around 30% of registered companies reportedly lack actual supply capacity, posing challenges for sustainable competition.
Operating in this tough environment, Chukyo Electric demonstrated resilience despite facing difficulties that led to a wave of bankruptcies among new power companies from 2021 to 2022. It has established a strong customer base in both high and low-voltage markets and adheres to a unique socially responsible model called
Energy Funding aimed at solving local issues and supporting community aspirations through electricity savings.
By acquiring Chukyo Electric, Kuradashi aims to establish a solid foundation for its electricity retail operations while simultaneously leveraging its expertise in sustainable energy and food waste reduction to create synergies for societal impact.
Strategic Significance of the Acquisition
The acquisition has three key strategic implications for Kuradashi:
1.
Immediate Acquisition of Electricity Retail Base
Kuradashi will gain a comprehensive customer base from Chukyo Electric, thereby eliminating the time and effort needed to secure a retail electricity operator license from scratch. This enables a swift and efficient entry into the electricity market post-acquisition.
2.
Strengthening the Storage-Retail Value Chain
Integrating Chukyo Electric's retail capabilities with Kuradashi’s battery storage knowledge will enhance the infrastructure necessary to optimize energy management, ultimately working toward minimizing waste in the energy supply chain.
3.
Synergy between Food and Energy
With a robust network of approximately 2,200 partner companies, Kuradashi can now advocate for Chukyo Electric’s energy solutions, enabling businesses to enhance their sustainability efforts from both food and energy perspectives, thus creating a unique and socially impactful cross-sell opportunity.

- - Board Meeting Resolution Date: May 29, 2026
- - Contract Signing Date: May 29, 2026
