Nordic Semiconductor Strengthens AI Edge Leadership with Neuton.AI Acquisition
Nordic Semiconductor Enhances Its Edge AI Leadership with Neuton.AI Acquisition
On June 17, 2025, Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in ultra-low-power wireless connectivity solutions, announced a significant development in the field of machine learning by acquiring the intellectual property and key technological assets of Neuton.AI. This acquisition signifies a new approach to edge machine learning, merging Nordic's cutting-edge nRF54 series ultra-low-power systems on a chip with Neuton.AI's fully automated TinyML framework. This integration aims to equip even the most resource-constrained devices with scalable, high-performance AI capabilities.
A Leap in Accessible Intelligence
According to Vegard Wollan, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor, this partnership represents a generational leap in computing power and efficiency for embedded systems. By combining Nordic’s leadership in low-power wireless technology with Neuton.AI’s advanced TinyML platform, developers are empowered to create a new category of AI-powered, always-on devices that are faster, smaller, and more energy-efficient than ever before.
One of the noteworthy aspects of Neuton.AI's technology lies in its patented fully automated platform, which creates machine learning models that are typically under 5 KB in size. This makes them not only ten times smaller but also significantly faster compared to traditional approaches. These models are designed for exceptional ease of use and require no manual tuning or extensive data science knowledge, allowing for rapid deployment on 8, 16, and 32-bit microcontrollers.
Neuton.AI's innovative neural network framework builds ultra-small models without any predefined architecture. This feature allows for precise, energy-efficient, and rapid AI applications for consumer, healthcare, and industrial markets while conserving essential system resources like energy and memory.
Bridging the Gap Between Power Consumption and Computational Intelligence
Oyvind Strom, Nordic's Senior VP for Short-Range Devices, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating that it effectively combines Neuton’s advanced machine learning technology with Nordic's nRF54 series capabilities. This synergy helps developers build smarter, low-power devices that truly harness edge machine learning—not only for the nRF54 series but across Nordic’s range of wireless connectivity solutions.
The demand for intelligence at the edge is on the rise. As such, Nordic is prepared to capture a share of the anticipated chip deliveries for TinyML, projected to reach $5.9 billion by 2030. This partnership presents developers with a robust and scalable AI/machine learning toolkit suitable for applications such as predictive maintenance, intelligent health monitoring, process automation, gesture recognition, and next-generation consumer wearable devices in the Internet of Things (IoT).
Integration and Future Prospects
The acquisition encompasses all intellectual property and specific assets of Neuton.AI, alongside a highly skilled team of 13 engineers and data science experts. During the initial integration phase, the Neuton.AI brand and platform will be maintained to ensure uninterrupted service for existing users and partners. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, and the completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals.
