Exploring New Career Strategies
On June 9, Trustyyle, located in Chuo, Tokyo, held a pivotal event celebrating the release of the book,
"Breaking Free from the Self-Perceived Limitations". This online gathering organized by their community,
HR Library, focused on career strategies as essential components of human resource management.
The central message of the book, as articulated by Miho Morikazu, CEO of
Your Patronum, is that one can devise a career strategy even in the absence of a clear ‘will’ or desire. Morikazu’s presentation and the interactive Q&A session provided insightful perspectives on re-framing career support from an individual challenge to a critical element of organizational strategy.
Highlights of the Event
Career Strategy = Theory x Yourself
Morikazu emphasized that while career theories offer frameworks, they are not infallible. She presented three vital elements that constitute a ‘genuine career’:
1.
Facts (Experience & Skills)
2.
Traits (Likes, Strengths, Stress)
3.
Values
She stressed that interpreting ‘experience’ as equivalent to ‘capability’ is a flawed perspective that needs addressing in modern HR frameworks.
Distinguishing Between Aspirations and Personal Identity
According to Morikazu, career support must start with a clear differentiation between externally influenced “aspirations” and intrinsic “identity.” Questions such as, “What would you do if there were no restrictions?” encourage a breakthrough in thought processes.
Family-Centric Career Types
The era is shifting towards designing careers not just as individual pursuits but as family-oriented frameworks. Morikazu outlined five family career types:
Single,
Lead,
Exchange,
Parallel, and
Complement. She underlined that sustainable performance stems from finding satisfaction in one’s work.
The Role of Emotion in Career Advancement
She concluded that the transformation of career behavior hinges not on “rightness” but rather on emotional engagement. The necessity for storytelling that invokes acceptance, empathy, and excitement came through as a vital mechanism for change.
Participant Feedback
Some notable comments from attendees included:
- - “The perspective that 'my desired self and my authentic self are different' resonated with me.”
- - “I realized that career consultations involve more than just asking about one’s will.”
- - “To promote behavioral change, it’s crucial to eliminate bottlenecks rather than simply add to existing frameworks.”
- - “I want to apply the concept of family careers to hiring and evaluation practices.”
Implications for HR Policies
The discussion suggested that lacking a defined 'will' is not inherently negative. Rather, reconceptualizing desired outcomes and the meaningful role of work is essential.
Transformative career support plays a significant role in reducing turnover rates. Often, organizations create disengagement by fostering a sense of limited choices. Building environments where employees cultivate a desire to stay is paramount.
Career considerations must also intertwine with life responsibilities; through parental leave, caregiving, and relocation of partners, personal and professional spheres are intimately connected. Designing systems that consider family dynamics is crucial for future endeavors.
Messages from the Speakers and Future Outlook
Morikazu redefined career support as a strategic asset rather than a mere benefit. The key aspects for a successful initiative include:
- - Fact-based Dialogue
- - Emotional Movement
- - Holistic Optimization, Including Life
The HR Library plans to conduct ongoing study sessions focusing on career and organizational development themes. By bridging workshops, literature, and practical communities, they aim to redefine career strategies as organizational strengths.
