In a recent survey conducted by Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd., the results for the 2025 Yamaguchi Prefecture Happiness Ranking and the Desired Living City Ranking were unveiled. This extensive survey, which gathered responses from nearly 9,000 residents in various age groups and marital statuses, identifies the top cities in terms of happiness and the desire to continue living in these areas.
Happiness Ranking Highlights
The Happiness Ranking for Yamaguchi Prefecture revealed that Kuga-gun Wakiki Town has taken the number one spot for the third consecutive year, followed by Iwakuni city at second, and Yamaguchi city in third place.
1st Place: Kuga-gun Wakiki Town
Wakiki Town claimed the highest rating with a standardized score in the 70s, securing its title as the happiest town for three years in a row. Remarkably, this town is the only one in a rural area that made it to the top 10.
2nd Place: Iwakuni City
Iwakuni City made a significant leap from sixth place last year to second place this year, showcasing its growing appeal among residents.
3rd Place: Yamaguchi City
This city maintained a steady presence in the top three, reflecting its well-rounded livability.
These happiness ratings are derived from responses accumulated over five years, assessing the general satisfaction of residents from 2021 to 2025, with adjustments made for areas with lower response counts.
Desired Living City Ranking Insights
The rankings for the cities where residents desire to continue living also showed interesting trends. For three consecutive years, Shimonoseki City has ranked first, followed by Shimonoseki City again in second place, and Hikari City made its way to third.
1st Place: Shimonoseki City
Recognized for its high livability, Shimonoseki City is the top choice for those wanting to continue living in their area, excelling in four categories that contribute to this ranking.
2nd Place: Kitakyushu City
Equally persistent, Kitakyushu City has maintained its second-place position for three years.
3rd Place: Hikari City
Hikari City improved from fourth last year, indicating rising satisfaction among its residents.

After being excluded from last year’s rankings due to insufficient response counts, this town rebounded to fifth place this year, becoming the only rural town in the top 10.
Survey Methodology
The survey executed by MacroMill received responses from 8,911 residents aged 20 and above from Yamaguchi Prefecture. The respondents were nearly evenly split among genders and provided insights into various demographics including marital status and family structure.
Additional surveys from previous years were used to supplement data for areas with lower participation.
Ranking Calculation
The happiness scores were calculated based on a scale from 1 (very unhappy) to 10 (very happy), converted to a 100-point system for ranking purposes. Similarly, desired living rankings were scored based on responses to whether residents wish to remain in their current city, using a scale from 100 (strongly agree) to 0 (strongly disagree).
This insightful data provides a valuable look into which cities in Yamaguchi Prefecture bring joy and satisfaction to their residents, underscoring the factors contributing to a high quality of life.
