Skipstone Opens Sustainable Winery in Alexander Valley
Skipstone, a family-run enterprise renowned for its commitment to environmental stewardship, celebrated a landmark moment with the grand opening of its new estate winery in the picturesque Alexander Valley. This achievement is not just a testament to Skipstone's ongoing dedication to sustainable wine production but also marks a pinnacle of their 25-year journey in organic farming and eco-friendly practices.
Situated within the forthcoming Pocket Peak AVA in California, this new facility is set to achieve the prestigious LEED Platinum certification. This certification, recognized globally, signifies the construction's adherence to the highest sustainable design standards. Founder and proprietor Fahri Diner expressed his vision, stating, "This winery represents the culmination of a vision that began more than 25 years ago. From the beginning, sustainability has guided every decision we've made. With the winery's completion, we can share the full Skipstone story—from soil to bottle—with visitors."
Skipstone’s estate has been a steadfast participant in environmentally responsible agriculture. With its CCOF certification as an organic vineyard since 2008, it proudly holds the title of the longest-tenured CCOF-certified vineyard in Alexander Valley. Vineyard Manager Juan Alcantara applies regenerative practices that incorporate biodynamic techniques, native cover crops, and minimal tillage, all aimed at enhancing soil quality and fostering biodiversity across the estate’s expansive 200 acres.
The winery’s design harmonizes with the surrounding environment, constructed using estate-sourced stone and reclaimed timber. Equipped with energy-efficient systems, the facility relies entirely on a 225-kW solar array for its electricity, highlighting its commitment to renewable energy. Furthermore, its unique living green roof not only provides insulation but also supports a variety of local wildlife.
To maintain optimal production conditions, a significant portion of the winery's space—approximately 7,700 square feet—is situated underground. This innovative design choice ensures stable temperatures, aiding in energy conservation. Above ground, the hospitality area offers breathtaking views of the vineyard's amphitheater landscapes, enhancing the visitor experience.
The winemaking process at Skipstone is led by accomplished Winemaker Laura Jones, alongside the esteemed consulting winemaker Philippe Melka, known for enhancing the craftsmanship behind Skipstone’s artisanal wines. The winery's focus extends beyond production; it aims to enrich visitor engagement through private tastings where guests can savor exquisite wines paired with cuisines sourced from local and estate culinary gardens.
With the winery’s inauguration, Skipstone plans to broaden its hospitality offerings, including curated wine dinners, cycling events, and communal brunches, all designed to immerse guests in the ethos of sustainable viticulture and the artistry of winemaking. Enhancing the guest experience and promoting their sustainable farming principles remain at the forefront of their goals.
In addition, Skipstone operates a unique five-bedroom estate, offering exclusive accommodations for visitors wishing to experience the serenity and beauty of Alexander Valley. For wine enthusiasts and eco-conscious travelers alike, Skipstone provides a remarkable opportunity to witness the fusion of nature and winemaking excellence.
