Introduction to the SHIBUYA Urban Farming Project
Kewpie Corporation, in collaboration with Shibuya Future Design, Plantio Inc., and Daiko, has launched the SHIBUYA Urban Farming Project (SUFP). This initiative aims to provide educational programs focusing on urban farming and community sustainability at two elementary schools in Shibuya: Tokiwa Matsumoto Elementary School and Rinkawa Elementary School. The program, which falls under the comprehensive learning curriculum titled "Shibuya Future Studies," encourages children to connect with their community and the world through food, fostering their ability to think critically and act as responsible global citizens.
Objectives and Curriculum Overview
The SUFP is designed to run from June to December, encompassing a wide range of experiential activities, including vegetable cultivation and culinary planning. Children will learn about the journey of vegetables from farm to table, explore various vegetable dishes, and engage in activities such as becoming chefs to cook meals with the vegetables they have grown.
The curriculum aims to develop three core competencies identified by the Shibuya district: self-regulation, creativity, and adventurousness. By integrating urban farming into their learning, students gain a deeper understanding of the significance of food production and its impact on society.
Educational Approach and Collaboration
To effectively implement the program, SUFP collaborates with various partners:
- - Shibuya Future Design: Providing general oversight and educational design.
- - Kewpie Corporation: Offering lectures on food education and culinary assistance.
- - Plantio Inc.: Delivering lectures and technical support in urban farming.
- - Daiko: Producing the curriculum and leading presentations.
- - ABC Sustainable Table: Supporting cooking experiences.
This collective approach allows for a rich learning environment, combining knowledge and expertise from various sectors.
Feedback from Educators
Keiko Hiura, Teacher at Tokiwa Matsumoto Elementary School:
“This year’s fifth graders will engage in learning activities centered around 'Food and Industry' through the SHIBUYA Urban Farming Project. By growing vegetables and exploring their significance, students will deepen their understanding of urban greening, cultural differences in food across regions, and social challenges related to food and industry.
As we leverage our smaller class size of 16 students, we are excited about the creative synergies that will emerge as they collaborate and share ideas, reinforcing the joy of collective exploration and problem-solving.”
Ayuko Hashidate, Teacher at Rinkawa Elementary School:
“I hope the students can actively experience the journey of the vegetables they grow until they reach their plates. This hands-on learning approach fosters a greater awareness of their connection with vegetables, the community, and the environment. Overcoming common aversions to vegetables will be an exciting journey, and we are thrilled about the possibilities this project holds in collaboration with various experts and companies.”
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, the SHIBUYA Urban Farming Project plans to further collaborate with local educational institutions and businesses to explore the intersections of learning and farming in urban settings. The initiative aims to share its insights and achievements during the 2025 ``SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK,'' spotlighting its ongoing commitment to fostering educational innovation and sustainability in the community.
