Trina Storage Sets New Standards in Energy Storage with Field-Tested Performance Metrics

In a significant boost for renewable energy technology, Trina Storage has unveiled independently verified performance data from its 150MW utility-scale agrivoltaic and storage project. This announcement comes after more than a year of continuous operation, demonstrating impressive efficiency and reliability levels that elevate the benchmarks for the industry.

UL Solutions and the China Quality Certification Center (CQC), reputable third-party evaluators, conducted the performance assessments. The findings revealed that the system consistently achieved a remarkable 95.2% DC efficiency and maintained 98% of usable capacity after a year of operation. Such metrics signify that the project is among the most efficient large-scale energy storage systems currently in operation, establishing a new standard for future installations.

Fully Integrated Design Standards

The project features Trina Storage’s Elementa Series, which utilizes proprietary in-house battery cells to optimize performance. The emphasis on both flexibility and scalability in its design allows it to cater to a variety of energy demands. One noteworthy technological feature is its intelligent thermal management system, which restricts temperature variations within 3°C and limits auxiliary power consumption to an efficient 1.8%. These innovations result in approximately 30% less energy loss compared to traditional systems, providing an impressive annual boost of around 200,000 kWh to overall output and returns.

This level of performance not only enhances energy delivery but also solidifies the economic viability of the project. The long-term reliability, evident in the minimal degradation observed, supports estimates of a 15-20% reduction in Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) when compared to industry averages.

Versatile Market Applications

The impressive efficiency and stability exhibited by Trina Storage’s system opens the door for its participation in various market segments. Operators can engage in several economic activities, including energy arbitrage, frequency regulation, and reserve services. These applications help in diversifying revenue streams and contribute to quicker investment payback periods, thereby enhancing financial sustainability for stakeholders involved.

Chen Chi, Product Manager in the Energy and Industrial Automation group at UL Solutions, emphasized the rigorous evaluation the system underwent. He noted, “The system has consistently demonstrated optimal efficiency and cycle life, with low auxiliary power consumption throughout the monitoring period. This implies a robust integration of technology alongside reliable performance under actual operational conditions.”

Commitment to Future Developments

Shawn Deng, Head of Global Product System Integration at Trina Storage, expressed pride in the technology’s continued value delivery in real-world settings. “Our objective is to foster trust through performance, demonstrating from Cell-to-AC capability complemented by third-party validation. We aim to partner with global entities to explore and test next-generation systems in varied environments, offering transparent and reliable benchmarks for the renewable energy sector moving forward.”

As the renewable energy landscape continues to evolve, Trina Storage’s groundbreaking advancements in energy storage solutions not only reflect the company's dedication to innovation but also signal promising developments towards a sustainable energy future.
