Envision Energy Leads the Way in Green Marine Ammonia Bunkering for Sustainable Shipping
Envision Energy's Innovative Step in Marine Fuel
Envision Energy, a key player in green technology, has made a groundbreaking advancement in sustainable shipping by successfully completing the world's first green marine ammonia bunkering operation. Conducted at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry terminal in Dalian, this event testifies to the ongoing evolution of maritime fuel technologies designed to reduce carbon emissions and promote a green future for shipping.
On July 25, 2025, the world witnessed a significant milestone when a 5,500 HP ammonia-powered port vessel received its inaugural bunkering of green ammonia fuel, produced at Envision's extensive green hydrogen and ammonia facility in Chifeng. This facility, known for being the largest and most cost-effective in the world, employs advanced production methods to convert renewable energy from wind, solar, and energy storage into green ammonia.
Frank Yu, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy, elucidated the implications of this achievement, stating, "This successful bunkering demonstrates how net zero fuels can scale from renewable power generation to hard-to-abate sectors like maritime shipping - a true breakthrough for green ammonia." He emphasized that this project marks a significant leap towards integrating renewable energy into maritime transport, highlighting the company’s commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuel dependence.
The Chifeng Green Hydrogen-Ammonia Project is not only a technological marvel, but it has also been awarded the ISCC Plus certification, recognizing its sustainable processes and verified greenhouse gas footprint. Additionally, the green ammonia produced here has received renewable certification from Bureau Veritas, affirming its eco-friendly credentials.
The port vessel that utilized the green ammonia fuel is equipped with innovative technologies, including an independently developed ammonia dual-fuel engine that boasts an ammonia substitution rate of up to 91%. This technological advancement minimizes reliance on conventional fossil fuels, thereby substantially reducing carbon emissions during its operations. Classified as the “Ammonia Fuel Tug” by the China Classification Society, this vessel sets a new benchmark for green shipping technologies.
The strategic operations at Dalian Port position it as the world’s first port capable of providing not just biofuel and green methanol but also LNG and green ammonia bunkering services. This development reinforces its status as a premier green energy hub in Northeast Asia, filling a vital role in the supply chain for green marine fuels that tackle international trade emissions.
This pioneering marine bunkering operation represents a critical step towards the decarbonization of global shipping practices. It provides a scalable model for other regions looking to transition to eco-friendly fuel sources. Envision Energy continues to lead by example, reinforcing its position at the forefront of the green transformation required for a sustainable energy future in shipping and across other industries.
As the global shipping industry grapples with the challenges of carbon emissions and environmental sustainability, Envision Energy's success sets a striking example of what can be achieved with innovative technologies and a commitment to renewable energy. This milestone isn’t just a win for one company, but it stands as a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable maritime sector worldwide.
