Presence Enhances Special Education Support with Strategic Acquisition of Education Modified
In a significant move to advance special education technology, Presence, a key player in preK-12 teletherapy services, has announced its acquisition of Education Modified. Founded in 2018, Education Modified has been at the forefront of innovating special education solutions, making this acquisition a notable step towards providing comprehensive support for school districts across the nation.
The demand for streamlined educational processes has never been higher as school districts juggle increasing needs for special education services. The integration of Education Modified seeks to address these challenges by offering a unified platform that connects special educators, administrators, and technical teams. This merger aims to facilitate a more efficient workflow for managing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), interventions, and student support services, tackling the complexities that schools currently face.
Kate Eberle Walker, the CEO of Presence, expressed her enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “Education Modified has built powerful technology, and we’re proud to integrate it into our platform.” This integration is expected to provide special education leaders and school staff improved visibility into services and outcomes, allowing them to spend less time on administrative tasks and more on supporting students directly.
A recent survey conducted by District Administration revealed that many school officials face significant hurdles due to fragmented systems and a lack of consolidated data visibility. Administrators reported issues with inconsistent documentation and data that's not up to date. Over 80% of the respondents indicated that an integrated system would be extremely valuable, reflecting a widespread need for a coordinated approach that enhances oversight and decision-making in special education.
Presence’s existing platform, Kanga, which is tailored for therapy service planning and documentation, will evolve further with the integration of Education Modified. By bringing together IEPs, Response to Intervention (RTI), and 504 workflows into one system, Kanga will grant educators access to shared student data in a centralized location, tracking accommodations alongside services. This will culminate in a comprehensive, real-time view of each student's progress within the full continuum of support.
In addition to its core functionalities, Education Modified features SmartPlans, which expedites the IEP creation process, boosting efficiency and compliance within educational institutions.
Melissa Corto, the founder and CEO of Education Modified, emphasized the importance of alignment among educators in special education settings. “We built Education Modified to make IEPs and student supports easier to access, understand, and act on. Joining Presence allows us to connect services and innovative technologies to ensure school teams can work together effectively,” she noted.
The acquisition reflects Presence's growing impact in the special education technology field, particularly highlighted by its recent accomplishments. With a network of over 2,000 clinicians, the company proudly announced the completion of over 8 million remote evaluations and teletherapy sessions. Their Kanga platform was recognized with TechLearning’s Best of 2025 Awards in both primary and secondary education categories, alongside their listing among the prestigious GSV 150.
Since its establishment in 2009, Presence has aimed to tackle the national shortage of school clinicians by fostering an enhanced approach to teletherapy. By partnering with schools across the country, Presence is dedicated to addressing students' special education-related and mental health needs. This acquisition of Education Modified marks an exciting frontier, offering a more integrated solution to meet the evolving needs of modern education.
In conclusion, Presence's acquisition of Education Modified is a promising development that aims to simplify and enhance the management of special education processes. As educational institutions increasingly seek efficient and comprehensive solutions, this strategic merger stands to benefit not only school staff and administrators but, most importantly, the students they serve.
