Sustainable Molecules Ltd (SuMo) and Velocys have achieved a groundbreaking milestone in the UK’s ambition to revolutionize sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The companies recently commissioned the first Fischer-Tropsch (FT) syncrude production system in the UK, a significant step in addressing the increasing demand for sustainable fuel solutions. This development highlights the potential of converting waste into high-quality, low-carbon aviation fuel, marking a major advance in the field.

The newly operating FT syncrude system effectively demonstrates SuMo's capabilities in producing syngas from waste materials. The facility's configurations allow for a significant reduction in infrastructure costs as it can be deployed at existing waste handling sites rather than requiring extensive new builds.

Part of a Larger Vision for Sustainable Energy



This accomplishment aligns with the wider ClearSkies project, aimed at enhancing the UK's capabilities in green technologies. Funded through a £4.2 million award from the UK Department for Transport's Advanced Fuels Fund, ClearSkies integrates various technologies to produce SAF at SuMo's Sustainable Molecules Facility (SMF) in Wednesbury. The project brings together leading experts and companies in the sector, allowing for a more holistic approach to fuel production, including carbon capture technology.

The SMF site has successfully demonstrated SuMo's advanced gasification technology to a Technology Readiness Level of 8 (TRL8). This upper-tier readiness indicates that the technology is well-prepared for commercial deployment. The collaboration remains focused on the development of comprehensive low-carbon solutions and emphasizes the critical nature of sustainable fuel production amidst soaring global environmental consciousness.
