Kansas City Hosts Record Number of Industrial Leaders at KC SmartPort Annual Briefing

On April 8, 2026, KC SmartPort, a pivotal entity of the Kansas City Area Development Council, welcomed over 750 industry leaders at their annual briefing. This event underlined the city's growing reputation as one of the top 15 industrial markets in the United States, emphasizing its robust logistics, manufacturing, and global investment capabilities.

During the program, attendees were granted valuable insights from industry heavyweights, including Lisa DeNight, managing director and head of North American industrial research at Newmark; Didi Caldwell, founder and president of Global Location Strategies; and Dave Harrison, president and CEO of VanTrust Real Estate. The keynote address was delivered by DeNight, who remarked, "The trends we observe across the industrial sector reflect a significant return to fundamentals. Occupiers and investors are focused on assets that promote efficiency, connectivity, and sustainable long-term growth potential. In highly strategic North American logistics hubs like Kansas City, these priorities foster renewed confidence and a noticeable increase in activity."

A Market Tailored for Scale and Agility

The Kansas City region boasts a talented workforce and a solid infrastructure that continues attracting new industrial operations. While several U.S. markets faced negative absorption figures in 2025, Kansas City ranked seventh nationally for positive net absorption and was featured among the top ten markets with the highest pre-leasing rates.

In addition to its domestic achievements, Kansas City is also a magnet for international investment. Over the past five years, the city has drawn in $4.43 billion in foreign direct investment, translating into the creation of approximately 5,000 new jobs and the occupation of 5.7 million square feet of industrial space. The presence of Kansas City Foreign Trade Zones further supports this economic growth, efficiently facilitating a flow of goods worth $2 billion annually.

Fostering Regional Development

KC SmartPort plays a crucial role in enhancing the manufacturing and logistics landscape within the region. Over the past five years, their initiatives have attracted projects that account for $6.9 billion in capital investment, generating over 9,400 jobs and adding 14 million square feet of industrial space to Kansas City.

Chris Gutierrez, president of KC SmartPort and the KC Foreign Trade Zones, articulated the city's potential succinctly: "Kansas City is a premier U.S. industrial hub featuring nearly 200,000 industrial workers and a strategic location that allows swift goods movement across North America. KC delivers certainty. In a rapidly changing world, companies require stability to grow and serve their customers efficiently, even in times of economic uncertainty."
