2027 Kia Telluride Achieves IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Rating for 2026

2027 Kia Telluride: A Leader in Safety and Innovation

Kia has once again proven its commitment to safety with the 2027 Telluride, which has been honored with the Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2026 model year. This accolade places the new Telluride alongside four other Kia models also recognized for their safety excellence.

Enhanced Safety Criteria for 2026

In 2026, the IIHS raised the bar for what constitutes a top safety vehicle. These stringent requirements emphasize rear passenger protection and improved collision avoidance capabilities. Notably, the updated test protocols demand higher performance in frontal overlap collisions and enhanced standards for pedestrian accident prevention.

To attain the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, vehicles must score well in several critical areas: small overlap front tests, moderate overlap front tests, and side-impact tests. Additionally, they must feature headlights that are rated as acceptable or good across all trim levels and standard collision avoidance systems that provide excellent performance in pedestrian tests. Optional systems are only acknowledged if they also meet these criteria.

A Testament to Safety Culture

SeungKyu (Sean) Yoon, President and CEO of Kia North America, noted, “The Telluride has become one of Kia's flagship models, and safety has been a cornerstone of its success. Receiving this vital certification from the IIHS reinforces our commitment to safety throughout its development while delivering the design and innovation our customers expect.”

The 2027 Telluride represents a significant evolution of Kia's three-row SUV, introducing a more spacious and feature-rich vehicle. Key improvements include expanded cabin space and cargo area, easier access to the third row, and an upgraded features list filled with comfort and technology enhancements.

One notable new addition is the optional turbo-hybrid powertrain, producing a remarkable combined output of 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque, achieving an estimated 35 mpg combined fuel economy in the EX FWD trim, as determined by EPA estimates. This option not only boosts performance but also enhances efficiency, reflecting Kia's dedication to sustainability.

Advanced Safety Features for Peace of Mind

The revamped Telluride also benefits from an upgraded architecture that provides a more robust framework. Kia has equipped the vehicle with 10 standard airbags, including a novel front-center airbag positioned between the driver and front passenger. These safety enhancements are complemented by illuminated seatbelt buckles in the second row and pretensioners for third-row seatbelts, underscoring Kia's proactive approach to occupant safety.

Additionally, the Telluride's suite of advanced driver-assistance systems has been broadened. Noteworthy technologies include Hands-on Detection (HoD), Lane Following Assist 2, an interior camera for monitoring driver alertness, and enhanced parking distance warning systems both for front and rear alertness.

A Sustainable Future

Based in Irvine, California, Kia America is recognized as a leading automotive quality brand. The car manufacturer has also gained accolades for its sustainability efforts, appearing in TIME's list of the world's most sustainable companies in 2026. As the official automotive partner of the NBA and WNBA, Kia offers a diverse range of vehicles—including gas, hybrid, and electric options—available through nearly 800 dealerships across the United States, showcasing several models proudly assembled in the country.

As consumers prioritize safety and sustainability, the 2027 Kia Telluride stands out not only as a safe choice but as a forward-thinking vehicle designed for modern needs. With its impressive safety rating and groundbreaking features, it cements Kia’s position as a leader in the automotive market.

In summary, the 2027 Kia Telluride does not merely meet standards; it sets the bar for safety and innovation in the automotive industry, making it a top choice for families seeking security and reliability on the road.
