Toyota's Hydrogen Innovations Lead to Milestones in Heavy-Duty Truck Development
Progress in Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Fuel Trucks
Toyota Motor North America, through its Hydrogen Headquarters (H2HQ), is making substantial strides in enhancing fuel technologies for heavy-duty trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells. This initiative aims to integrate these advancements into Toyota's commercial fleets across the United States.
Recently, the automaker set up two mobile hydrogen refueling stations at the North American Parts Center California (NAPCC), which is Toyota's largest parts distribution facility in the U.S. With these stations operational, the logistics fleets of Toyota are anticipated to utilize them for fueling their hydrogen fuel cell trucks, which will transport goods from the Port of Los Angeles to Ontario and throughout the region. A permanent refueling station is slated for construction in that location.
These refueling stations will initially support hydrogen-powered trucks sourced through Hyroad Energy, complementing future deployments of heavy-duty trucks with Toyota’s certified fuel cell propulsion systems. The conventional refueling process carries profound implications for operational efficiency and sustainability in transport logistics.
Partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory
In a remarkable public-private partnership, Toyota has joined forces with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the U.S. Department of Energy, based in Golden, Colorado. This collaboration focuses on various initiatives, particularly the provision of high-flow hydrogen refueling at 70 MPa levels for heavy-duty trucks.
Such high-flow refueling systems allow trucks to be filled with hydrogen at rates up to 300 grams per second, which is approximately five times faster than conventional refueling rates used for lighter vehicles. The speed of this process enables heavy-duty trucks to replenish energy at rates comparable to fast-charging systems for electric vehicles, thus significantly reducing downtime.
Toyota engineers, alongside their counterparts at NREL, have conducted extensive testing in line with SAE J2601-5 standards, successfully demonstrating that trucks fitted with Toyota engines can be refueled in about eight minutes, offering a range of up to 450 miles. Production models featuring Toyota powertrains are expected to hit the roads for commercial operations by 2027.
Advancing Hydrogen Infrastructure
In the upcoming months, Toyota aims to upgrade its private hydrogen supply infrastructure at H2HQ to comply with high-flow standards for heavy-duty vehicle testing. Additionally, there are plans to install new infrastructure for light-duty passenger vehicles that use hydrogen fuel cells to evaluate station hardware and share valuable insights aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and reliability.
Once the permanent public-access station at NAPCC is completed, Toyota intends to offer both conventional and high-flow hydrogen refueling for heavy-duty trucks, while ensuring a separate area for light vehicle refueling needs.
Toyota's commitment to advancing fuel cell technology extends across various applications, including heavy-duty vehicles, stationary power generation, and light-duty passenger cars, reinforcing its historical dedication to environmental sustainability and energy independence.
About Toyota's Hydrogen Headquarters (H2HQ)
