ABB Unveils Cutting-Edge EV Fast Chargers at Smart Energy Week 2026 in Tokyo

In an exciting development for the electric vehicle (EV) market, ABB is set to showcase their groundbreaking EV charging solutions at the Smart Energy Week 2026, held from March 17 to 19 at Tokyo Big Sight. This event features the 19th International Smart Grid Exhibition, where ABB plans to present their latest innovations to cater to the ever-evolving needs of EV charging standards.

Leading the charge is the new A400 all-in-one fast charger, a groundbreaking product made specifically to support multiple charging standards, including the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This charger boasts a remarkable maximum output of 400 kW, enabling it to charge one vehicle at an impressive 367.5 kW or distribute power between two vehicles according to demand via five different output combinations: 100 kW + 300 kW, 150 kW + 250 kW, 200 kW + 200 kW, and 250 kW + 150 kW.

GG In tandem with the A400, ABB will also exhibit the Terra 184 JN model, which is designed to accommodate both CHAdeMO and NACS, two widely-recognized charging standards. Set for release in the fall of 2025, the Terra 184 JN is capable of charging one vehicle at a maximum of 150 kW for CHAdeMO and 180 kW for NACS. Furthermore, this model can facilitate simultaneous charging for two vehicles at a maximum of 90 kW. The existing Terra 184 JJ model is available for retrofit options, ensuring that ABB can swiftly adapt to expanding demands for NACS-compatible vehicles in the future.

As the EV market continues to grow, Japan has seen a coexistence of CHAdeMO and NACS charging protocols, emphasizing the need for adaptable and future-proof charging infrastructure. "With the dual presence of CHAdeMO and NACS in Japan, we recognize the pressing need for flexible and scalable charging solutions," said Yukio Kataoka, the head of ABB's E-mobility division. He further stated, "The A400 is engineered to provide high charging performance within a compact footprint, offering a seamless and intuitive user experience akin to using a smartphone. Meanwhile, the Terra 184 JN addresses the needs of manufacturers, dealers, and operators by efficiently handling both charging standards. Through enhancing our portfolio, we aim to contribute significantly to the growth of EV adoption and the advancement of charging infrastructure in Japan."

For visitors, ABB's booth is strategically located at E73-6 in Hall 8, showcasing the A400 (NACS + NACS model), which is set for commercial availability in 2026, alongside the Terra 184 JN (CHAdeMO + NACS model), debuting in 2025. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance for the event to experience the future of EV charging firsthand.

With its rich history spanning over 140 years and over 110,000 employees worldwide, ABB stands as a leader in electrification and automation, committed to achieving a sustainable and resource-efficient future. By marrying engineering and digital expertise, ABB empowers industries to enhance their performance, improve efficiencies and productivity whilst driving sustainable outcomes.
