Celebrating the World's Best Sommeliers' Selection 2026: A Tribute to Wine Excellence

A Toast to the World's Best: Sommeliers' Selection 2026

In a grand celebration of vinous mastery, the World's Best Sommeliers' Selection for 2026 has been unveiled, showcasing an impressive lineup of wines chosen by leading sommeliers from across 17 countries on six continents. This prestigious occasion, spearheaded by Kristell Monot, the President of the selection and Head Sommelier at Mugaritz, reflects not only a deep appreciation for wine but also an acknowledgment of the artisans behind each bottle.

The Selection Process

The rigorous judging process brought together experts from the renowned World's 50 Best Restaurants network. Tastings involved an extensive variety of wines, culminating in a selection of 115 exceptional bottles representing the diversity of the global wine landscape. Panellists engaged in thoughtful deliberation, valuing cultivars, terroir, and winemaking techniques to curate this year's celebrated collection.

Highlights from Italy to the USA

Leading the charge in this year's selection, Italy stood out prominently with 20 wines, 13 of which were reds. Nebbiolo captured the spotlight with four entries from Barolo and Barbaresco, celebrating the rich heritage of Italian winemaking. Additionally, new interpretations shone through, such as Clara Marcelli's captivating Grenache and the innovative seabed-aged Merlot from Tenuta Del Paguro.

Following Italy, Portugal impressed with 18 selections that spanned white, red, and fortified categories. The selection highlighted the strength of indigenous varieties, particularly five standout white wines. The Douro region's eight red entries, along with three ports and two Madeira wines, reinforced Portugal's esteemed reputation in fortified wines.

The USA secured its place with 17 represented wines — six reds and one white from California (notably including Sonoma’s Pinot Noir and Paso Robles’ Cabernet Sauvignon). Additionally, Texas added six wines to the mix, while Oregon’s Lingua Franca impressed with selections of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

From Spain, the panel identified seven red wines from prestigious regions such as Ribera del Duero, Rioja, and Priorat, alongside two noteworthy sherries and Pere Ventura’s Cava, which showcased the continued global interest in sparkling wines. Meanwhile, Argentina proudly contributed 12 wines to the lineup, with Malbec prominently featured among seven reds. The stylistic range displayed in the four white wines illustrated the evolving narrative of Argentine viticulture, especially with Uco Valley’s Rutini demonstrating a spectrum that includes both traditional and contemporary offerings.

Meanwhile, other countries in Europe also made their mark. France’s sparkling and rosé entries commanded attention, Germany impressed with three distinct Rieslings, and Czech Republic’s Gurdau added three bottles featuring its acclaimed Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, and Sekt. Traditional varietals from Georgia and selections from Greece rounded out the diverse offerings.

A Celebration of Diversity

A spokesperson from the World's Best Sommeliers' Selection emphasized the importance of this collection: "The selection reflects the incredible diversity of the global wine landscape, from revered classics to bold new voices. We take pride in bringing together the world's top sommeliers to define the future of wine." This ethos is vital for wine professionals looking to deliver unique experiences to consumers.

As wine lovers and industry professionals eagerly explore this remarkable selection, it serves not only as a benchmark for quality but also as a source of inspiration.
