Enshu Tea Ceremony Presentation at Barneys New York Ginza
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Barneys New York Ginza will host a remarkable presentation of the Enshu tea ceremony, led by the esteemed master Watanabe Munan. This prestigious event, organized by Barneys Japan, represents a unique opportunity to witness this time-honored tradition that has been preserved for over four centuries.
The Enshu school of tea ceremony, founded by the renowned tea master Kobori Enshu during the early Edo period, is celebrated for its aesthetic principles of "Kirei-sabi," emphasizing elegance and simplicity. Under the guidance of the Tokugawa shogunate, Kobori Enshu influenced the evolution of Japanese tea culture, infusing it with a deep appreciation for beauty and serenity. Watanabe Munan, a direct descendant of the Enshu lineage, will personally demonstrate the nuances of this refined art.
The ceremony will take place in a captivating mobile tea room, constructed using thinned cypress wood sourced from Tokyo's woodland areas. This stunning structure employs traditional Japanese woodworking techniques that have been refined and mastered over a millennium, showcasing the artisanal craftsmanship of temple carpenters who created it without the use of nails. These materials not only reflect ecological responsibility but also resonate with the serenity of nature itself.
Visitors to this extraordinary event will be welcomed by Barneys New York staff adorned in traditional kimonos, enhancing the overall experience of Japanese beauty and springtime decor. The event is structured into three sessions, providing guests with ample opportunities to observe the tea preparations:
- - First Session: 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM
- - Second Session: 2:15 PM - 2:45 PM
- - Third Session: 3:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Please note that participation in the tea ceremony itself is not permitted; however, all attendees are invited to freely observe the preparation process. We kindly request that you refrain from photographing the ceremony out of respect for the traditions that it embodies.
