Coffee Industry Trade Cooperation Showcased at China-Africa Expo
During the recent 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE), an event dedicated to promoting the coffee industry was held, showcasing the persistent efforts of a Chinese county to capitalize on new opportunities for growth. Changsha County, located in Hunan Province, China, has announced its plans to establish a coffee production industrial park. This initiative aims to bridge the existing gap in the value chain for high-quality coffee sourced from Africa into China. The county envisions that by developing companies and creating a professional operational environment, the annual production value of the park, located in the airport zone of the Changsha (Hunan) pilot free trade zone, could exceed 1 billion Yuan by 2027, alongside coffee bean imports surpassing 2 billion Yuan. On June 13, Changsha County welcomed seven significant investment projects for its emerging local coffee industry, with various Hunan-based companies signing relevant contracts. These projects include industrial complexes, corporate headquarters, and online platforms, focusing on the production and processing, storage and logistics, trade, and product R&D associated with African coffee beans.
This strategic endeavor marks a substantial advancement for the Chinese county, as it aims to create a domestic transportation hub that fosters an open development approach, encourages new growth drivers, and deepens economic and trade collaboration between China and Africa. Chen Yonggao, head of Changsha County, highlighted during the event that the local coffee industry is beginning to leverage its potential and appeal, given the favorable transportation links, vibrant consumer market, and conducive business environment. Chen expressed hope that related companies would become long-term partners and pioneers in shaping the county's coffee industry, aiming for early competitive advantages, breakthroughs in various sectors, and the establishment of a dynamic coffee industry ecosystem that elevates local coffee to a broader market.
Since the beginning of this year, Changsha County has integrated its coffee industry plans into its local development blueprint for 2026-2030, intending to penetrate deeper into the African market. Consequently, the county will focus on aspects like coffee production and processing, storage and logistics, technological innovation services, cultural experiences, and transaction services within the coffee production park, further advancing economic and trade cooperation with Africa. From January to April this year, local trade between Changsha County and African countries surged by 108%, amounting to 4.104 billion Yuan, reflecting a promising upward trend for future collaborations.
