Eutelsat America and OneWeb Technologies Name Ian Canning as New CEO

Major Leadership Change at Eutelsat America Corp. and OneWeb Technologies

In a significant move within the satellite communications sector, Eutelsat America Corp. and OneWeb Technologies Inc. (collectively referred to as EACOWT) have appointed Ian Canning as their new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This decision, effective from December 20, 2024, highlights a strategic shift as the company aims to bolster its reputation and service offerings in the satellite communications industry.

Background of Ian Canning

Ian Canning has been a critical figure in EACOWT's journey, having previously served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and more recently as the acting CEO. His leadership experience in the global satellite communications and telecommunications sectors is extensive. Ian joined the predecessor company, TrustComm, in 2012, where he played a vital role in facilitating its successful acquisition by OneWeb and its subsequent transformation into an independent U.S. proxy company.

Before his tenure at EACOWT, Canning was instrumental in leading product innovation and marketing efforts at Stratos Global Corp. Additionally, he worked with Iridium Satellite LLC, where he established strategic partnerships across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). His career also includes significant roles at major telecommunications companies like Inmarsat, Nortel, and Motorola.

Vision for the Future

As CEO, Ian Canning will be at the forefront of advancing EACOWT's vision of providing global satellite connectivity and innovative solutions. His leadership will focus on addressing the unique mission requirements of the U.S. government and its allies, a commitment that aligns with EACOWT’s long-standing reputation for reliability and excellence in technical services.

Ian's appointment comes following the departure of Kevin Steen, who had led EACOWT since May 2024. Dr. Pamela Drew, chair of the EACOWT Board of Directors, praised Ian’s contributions to the company, voicing her confidence that his industry acumen and dedication will drive the company to new heights.

Commitment to Innovation

Canning has expressed his enthusiasm for stepping into the CEO role at such a pivotal time. He stated, “Our team is dedicated to delivering innovative and secure SATCOM solutions to meet the evolving needs of the U.S. government and its allies. I look forward to continuing our mission of providing resilient, multi-orbit satellite capabilities.”

This ambition is echoed by Eva Berneke, CEO of Eutelsat Group, who underscored Canning's remarkable ability to advance new technologies in the satellite sector and his comprehensive understanding of the industry’s nuances.
