Bloomberg Enhances Japanese Government Bond Trading Through Full Automation

Bloomberg Unveils Fully Automated Trading in the Japanese Government Bond Market

On October 4th, 2026, Bloomberg made a significant advancement in the bond trading landscape by successfully implementing the first fully automated trading system for Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) under its Market-on-Close functionality. This innovative approach introduces a seamless integration of technology into bond trading, aligning specifically with the BB3P (Hikene Trading) reference rate for JGBs.

The newly introduced workflow is designed to minimize tracking errors while providing assurance of execution at a designated close time, thereby enhancing predictability in transactions. This sophisticated functionality is now part of Bloomberg Electronic Markets, bringing together trading capabilities that incorporate Bid/Offer List Trading alongside Bloomberg's Rule Builder, an advanced tool for trade automation. This setup allows clients to clearly define their execution parameters, ensuring automated order routing based on predefined conditions within a streamlined order and execution management system via TSOX.

Yudhveer Chaudhry, the Head of Emerging Markets, FX, Commodities, and Digital Assets at BlackRock, highlighted the profound impact of this new automated trading capability. He remarked, “Combining Market-on-Close execution with rule-based automation represents a transformative step for the JGB markets. This development not only expedites the time to market but also facilitates more systematic execution at the BB3P market reference. Ultimately, it helps minimize transaction costs and reduces reliance on manual processes, contributing to consistent and optimized results for investors, especially during busy trading periods.”

This exciting development is particularly noteworthy for one of the largest bond markets in Asia, and it underscores the collaborative effort between Bloomberg and various partners, including BlackRock, to introduce such pioneering protocols.

Norman Tweeboom, who serves as the Japan Enterprise Sales Head at Bloomberg, emphasized the organization's ongoing commitment to enhancing Global Market-on-Close capabilities. He stated,
