CNOOC Limited Launches Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield Development Project, Enhancing Energy Supply
CNOOC Limited Unveils Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield Development Project
CNOOC Limited, a leading Chinese oil and gas producer, has officially commenced operations for the Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield Development Project (Phase I). This significant milestone, announced on February 6, 2025, marks a pivotal point in the company's expansion efforts in offshore oil extraction.
Located in the central region of Bohai Bay, the Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield features a shallow average water depth of around 20 meters, making it more manageable for development and operation. The project is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a centralized processing platform and an unmanned wellhead platform. Over the course of its development, CNOOC plans to commission a total of 33 wells, comprising 22 production wells, 10 gas injection wells, and one water source well.
The anticipated peak production rate for this oilfield is notably high, with projections indicating an output of about 22,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day starting in 2025. The oil extracted from this site consists of light crude, which is generally more desirable in the market due to its higher quality.
The Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield is notable for being the world’s largest metamorphic buried hill oilfield, with a cumulative proven oil and gas in-place exceeding 200 million cubic meters. This rapid development - from the discovery of the oilfield to the commencement of production in just three years - has been possible thanks to the application of standardized engineering practices. This efficiency exemplifies how technological advancements can facilitate quicker transitions from exploration to production.
Another significant aspect of the Bozhong 26-6 project is its incorporation of innovative Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies. As part of CNOOC's efforts to promote sustainable practices, this initiative involves capturing and separating the carbon dioxide produced during oil extraction. The captured carbon is then re-injected back into the oil formation, which not only assists in boosting oil production but also reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions. The project is projected to sequester approximately 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide throughout its operational life span, demonstrating CNOOC’s commitment to low-carbon development.
Yan Hongtao, the President of CNOOC Limited, emphasized the importance of the Bozhong 26-6 project, stating that its launch signifies a new chapter for the company in exploring and developing deepwater oil and gas reservoirs. It reinforces CNOOC's capability in enhancing energy supply while also adhering to low-carbon initiatives across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Bohai Rim regions.
CNOOC Limited maintains a full 100% ownership stake in the Bozhong 26-6 project, overseeing all operational activities. This project highlights the company's strategic focus on leveraging advanced technologies to maximize production efficiency while responsibly managing environmental impacts.
With the successful deployment of the Bozhong 26-6 Oilfield Development Project, CNOOC Limited further solidifies its position as a key player in the global oil and gas industry, working not only to meet domestic energy demands but also to adhere to sustainable development goals.
