John Couris and Colleagues Honored in Florida Trend's 2026 Florida 500 List

In a significant acknowledgment of leadership within the state, Florida Trend has unveiled its 2026 Florida 500 list, highlighting influential figures across various sectors. This year, five remarkable leaders, including John Couris, the president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital (TGH), have been honored for their substantial contributions to health care, community well-being, and economic growth in Florida. Couris is making waves as he celebrates his sixth consecutive inclusion in this prestigious recognition aimed at spotlighting powerful executives across more than 60 business categories.

Joining him on this notable list are members of the Florida Health Sciences Center Board of Directors: Blake Casper, CEO of Caspers Company; Gregory Celestan, president of Celestar, LLC; and Drew Graham, managing partner of Ballast Point Ventures. The addition of Jennifer Crabtree, president of the Tampa Medical Research District (TMRD) and senior vice president at TGH, further showcases the breadth of influential leadership in this vital sector.

The selectors behind Florida Trend meticulously researched and conducted interviews with a multitude of executives, ensuring that the recognition bestowed reflects not just professional impact but also meaningful community engagement and philanthropic endeavors. Importantly, advertising had no sway in annulling their decisions, ensuring that the focus remained solely on leadership and the impact of these executives on the communities they serve.

"Our board is proud to see John recognized for a sixth consecutive year," expressed Blake Casper. "He has translated an ambitious vision into meaningful results for patients and communities across Florida. What’s more, this year’s recognition also highlights the strength of the leaders who work alongside him. Together, we are making substantial strides in academic medicine and innovation, ensuring our state progresses economically and socially."

Since taking on the role of TGH's president and CEO in 2017, Couris has implored a vision to transform Tampa General into an academic health system that not only serves the community but pushes the boundaries of medical research and treatment. His leadership has been vital in forging partnerships with premier institutions like Mass General Brigham and GE HealthCare, as well as launching TGH Ventures, which promotes development in health care technologies. Under his guidance, Tampa General also created the TMRD, a collaborative effort designed to bolster medical research and economic activity, projected to generate over $8.3 billion annually and create nearly 58,000 jobs in Florida.

Concurrent with local advocacy, Couris is deeply involved in national health care policies. His recent appointment to the HHS Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services, combined with his ongoing role at the Florida Health Care Innovation Council, articulates his commitment to elevating health policy discourse.

"I feel truly honored to be recognized amongst such influential leaders who are collectively working towards making Florida a healthier place, both for residents and visitors alike," remarked Couris. "Ultimately, this acknowledgment reflects our entire team’s dedication—physicians, board members, and partners—all working hand in hand to advance access to care and innovate solutions for the future."

In tandem with Couris' achievements, the board members—Casper, Celestan, and Graham—bring invaluable experience in business, investment, and security to their leadership roles at the Florida Health Sciences Center Board. Their strategic oversight ensures that Tampa General remains at the forefront of health care innovation and quality.

Jennifer Crabtree’s role as the inaugural president of TMRD since October 2025, further emphasizes the importance of collaboration across sectors. Under her leadership, TMRD is positioned to connect health care, research, and business professionals to facilitate new discoveries and drive economic growth, a testament to her agility in moving from strategy to implementation.

The collaborative contributions from these distinguished leaders foster an environment where academic medicine and innovative healthcare solutions can thrive, ultimately enhancing Tampa’s status as a medical destination. Tampa General has consistently ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Tampa Bay for over a decade, and continues to set benchmarks in clinical quality and organizational performance. It maintains its excellence by incorporating cutting-edge technologies and approaches to healthcare delivery, which Couris has championed throughout his leadership tenure.

Overall, this year’s Florida 500 list serves not just as an accolade but as a reminder of the depth, commitment, and collaboration required to make impactful changes within the health landscape of Florida, driven by leaders dedicated to their communities and professions.
