The Remarkable Homecoming of Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr.
This Memorial Day weekend marks a significant chapter in the history of Livermore, California, as 2nd Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr., a local hero, returns home after being missing for over 80 years. His story, one filled with valor, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of closure, resonates deeply within the hearts of his family and community.
A Soldier’s Journey
Born on January 27, 1923, Thomas V. Kelly Jr. grew up in Livermore, where he was baptized at St. Michael Catholic Church and graduated from Livermore High School. He answered the call of duty and enlisted to serve his country during World War II, becoming a bombardier with the 90th Bombardment Group, 320th Squadron. Kelly flew crucial missions across the Pacific Theater, demonstrating bravery and commitment. Tragically, his flight was cut short when the B-24 bomber he was on was shot down over Hansa Bay, Papua New Guinea, on March 11, 1944. Subsequently, he and his ten crewmates were declared missing in action.
For decades, Lt. Kelly's family and friends held on to hope, yearning for news that might bring closure. Their steadfast belief that he would one day return home never faded, even as time passed.
The Breakthrough in the Search
In 2017, a light of hope emerged when a nonprofit organization known as Project Recover located the wreckage of Kelly’s aircraft. Their efforts laid the groundwork for a recovery mission that took place in 2023, led by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. This mission ultimately resulted in the positive identification of Kelly’s remains, transforming decades of uncertainty into an opportunity for healing and remembrance.
Kathy Borst, Lt. Kelly’s niece, expressed her feelings about this long-awaited homecoming by stating,
“A journey our family stumbled into 13 years ago is coming to a conclusion that none of us could have predicted or imagined...I have boundless gratitude for the dedication and extraordinary efforts of Project Recover and the US military.” These sentiments echo the emotions shared among many who have dedicated themselves to ensuring that the sacrifices made by fallen heroes are honored and remembered.
Honors and Memorial Services
The events surrounding Kelly’s return will be profound and poignant, beginning with a motorcade procession leading to a Lying in Repose at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens and Mortuary. Family, friends, and members of the community are invited to pay their respects on May 25. The next day, a funeral mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church, allowing everyone the chance to honor the fallen hero and dutiful bombardier.
While the interment will be private, a dedication ceremony will take place at the veterans memorial at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens, further commemorating Lt. Kelly's sacrifice. Tom Borst, another nephew of Kelly, added,
“Bringing Tommy home honors his sacrifice—and the hope his parents and sister carried that he would not be forgotten.”
A Legacy of Sacrifice
The return of Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr. is not just a story of personal tragedy; it is emblematic of the broader struggles many families faced during and after the war. His compelling journey underscores the importance of remembering those who served and honoring their sacrifices. As the community gathers to pay tribute to this remarkable man, it serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit and resilience that define the nation.
